Lets talk apples

At Veggiefruit i stock many varieties of apple

Here is some information on whats available currently

โ€ข Pink lady apple

Pink Lady apples are a crisp, premium variety known for their perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.

Developed in Western Australia in 1973 as a cross between Lady Williams and Golden Delicious, they feature distinctive bright pink skin and dense, creamy white flesh.

Flavor Profile: Consistently crisp with an effervescent, sweet-tart taste.

Texture: Dense, firm, and juicy, which makes them excellent for both snacking raw and holding their shape when baked.

Storage: They store exceptionally well and retain their crunch for weeks when kept refrigerated.

Origin: Registered under the name Cripps Pink, they were developed by horticulturist John Cripps and require a long, hot growing season.

โ€ข Granny Smith

Granny Smith apples are crisp, bright green fruits famous for their bracingly tart flavor.

Originating as a chance seedling in Eastwood, New South Wales in 1868, they are highly versatileโ€”excellent for snacking and renowned in baking because their firm flesh holds its shape under heat.

Flavor Profile: Highly acidic, tart, and zesty when bright green. They sweeten slightly if left to ripen to a yellow hue.

Texture: Dense, crunchy, and very juicy.

Best Uses: Perfect for classic apple pies, tarts, and crumbles, as they retain their tart bite and shape without turning mushy.

Availability: Best from autumn through winter.

Selection: Look for deeply green, firm apples without soft spots or bruises. Avoid yellowing skin if you want maximum tartness.

Storage: Keep in your refrigerator's crisper drawer, where they can last for several weeks.

โ€ข Red Delicious

Red Delicious apples are a widely grown Australian variety, famously produced in the Batlow region of NSW and across Victoria.

Known for their distinct heart shape, deep crimson skin, and mildly sweet flavor, they are a staple for fresh snacking and fruit bowls.

Retail Price: Typically ranges between $4.00 to $8.00 per kilogram depending on the retailer and current seasonal availability.

Storage Tips: To maintain their crispness and flavor, store Red Delicious apples in your refrigerator's crisper drawer, kept separate from other produce to prevent premature ripening.

โ€ข Gala Apples

Australian Royal Gala apples are beloved for their crisp texture and honeyed sweetness.

Grown widely across major states including Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania, they are commonly harvested from late summer and are readily available in local supermarkets and grocers.

Flavor Profile: Mildly sweet with a tender crunch, making them perfect for snacking or slicing into salads.

Appearance: Recognizable by their creamy yellow skin with vibrant red-and-gold stripes.

Varieties: In Australia, you might also come across the Galaxy apple, a patented sport of the Royal Gala that features a darker red blush.

How to Pick: Look for apples that are firm to the touch with tight, unblemished skin and a good balance of red and yellow color.

Storage: Store them in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, where they will maintain their crunch and freshness for several weeks.

โ€ข Yello Apples

Yellow apples grown in Australia include the popular yelloยฎ variety.

Yelloยฎ is a sweet, crisp, tropical-tasting cross between a Golden Delicious and a Senshu apple, while Golden Delicious is well known for its balanced, sweet flavor and excellent baking qualities.

Flavor Profile: Complex, subtly sweet, and slightly tangy with tropical notes and a creamy flesh.

Season: Hand-picked and available in store around autumn through to October.

Origin: Developed in Japan in 1993, grown locally in regions like West Gippsland by orchardists such as Montague.

โ€ข Bravo apple

Bravo apples are a premium, proudly Australian-grown fruit variety developed in Western Australia.

Known for their striking deep burgundy skin, crisp texture, and exceptionally sweet, complex flavor.

The creamy white flesh is slow to brown, making them perfect for snacking, salads, and cheese boards.Bravo apples are harvested in cool-climate orchards, with peak season running from autumn through early winter.

Flavor Profile: Sweeter and more complex than standard red apples, with a firm, satisfying crunch.

Health Benefits: High in antioxidants (flavonoids), fiber, and vitamin C.

Origin: Cultivated over 20 years by the Australian National Apple Breeding program as a cross between Royal Gala and Cripps Red.

โ€ข Kanzi Apples

Kanzi apples are a premium, crisp variety grown in over 70 Australian orchards, stretching from Batlow (NSW) to Tasmania and Western Australia.

Known for a perfect sweet-tart balance inherited from their Gala and Braeburn parents, they are ideal for snacking, baking, and slicing.

Flavor & Texture: Highly juicy with a firm, crisp bite. They have a distinct sweet-tangy profile.
No Browning: Their dense flesh naturally stays white for much longer after slicing, making them excellent for lunchboxes.

Nutrition: High in Vitamin C; a single Kanzi apple provides over 40% of your recommended daily intake.

Harvest Season: Freshly picked Kanzi apples are best harvested and enjoyed from late March through spring.

Growing Regions: They are 100% Australian grown in colder-climate regions, including the Yarra Valley (VIC), Adelaide Hills (SA), Manjimup (WA), Stanthorpe (QLD), and the Huon Valley (TAS).

Storage Tips: Because of their density, storing them in your fridge can keep them fresh for 1 to 2 months.

โ€ข Jazz Apples

Jazz apples in Australia are a premium, seasonal variety known for their dense, crunchy flesh and sweet-tart flavor.

A natural cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn, these vibrant, red-pink apples are grown in colder regions like the Adelaide Hills.

They are harvested from autumn through spring.
from mid-April.

Flavor Profile: They offer a perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess with an exceptionally satisfying crunch.

Storage: To retain their signature crispness and extend their shelf-life, store them in the fridge.

Uses: Because they hold their shape and crunch well, they are excellent eaten fresh, on a cheese board, or baked into tarts.

Grower Information :Jazz apples are grown under strict license in Australia by premium agricultural groups like Montague Farms.

Its 6pm and I haven't started packing up yet, why u might ask ?

Well it also answers another question

Why do I want to work so much ?

I always dreamed of owning a shop, many of them actually

As i get older ive come to realise I might not get everything i dream of

When I was a kid the teacher would ask, " what do u want to be when u grow up "

Some would say fire-fighter, some would say a nurse i remember one kid say he wanted to work at McDonald's.

When the teacher asked me i said " I want to be a know all "

The kids laughed and the teacher asked me what I ment.

Well in my mind I want to know everything, as if you wouldn't want to know everything.

Well im 42 years old and I dont know everything, but I do know a hell of a lot .

My mum died when I was 14, I dived head first into a carpentry apprenticeship, I was that annoying apprentice that didnt want to do just labour work.

I wanted to know everything that there was to know about carpentry.

I did extra modules at tafe and was lucky to be with multiple different builders during my apprenticeship.

I like to think that I can build anything, litterally anything

I finished my apprenticeship before i was 18

Kept building till I recieved long service leave then stopped to be a stay home dad and look after my daughter mia.

I can fix just about anything, i can cook, being raised by my mum and nan I can knit crochet and sew.

I played nearly all sports, ive learnt how to play many other things too.

Ive always take what my mum said to be before she died and that was

Aaron you can do anything

Ive always taken life as a journey, an opportunity to experience as my son would say .

I dont take things too seriously, i follow my heart and and let life take me on a ride to see what happens .

Im loving where it's going atm ,im still here at the shop because I wanted to clean up and get some good shots for this post

I treat the shop like im building something, it's almost science to me

Start with a hypothesis

Work out ideas in my head of what it could look like and think of theories that will help me build the ideas I have in my head.

I have a keen eye for detail and my vision is have is clear as day in my head.

The only thing that slows me down is having the money to build it, sometimes I have to improvise and change the plan.

But i always keep the original narrative in mind

First thing is the produce has to look good,

Anyone can put fruit and veg on a table ,I wanted it to not just look good but feel good

When I walk into my shop I want it to feel inviting, with warm colours and many sections throughout the shop that look good separately aswell as a whole

It also has to be functional, easy to navigate and use

Yesterday the owner of the building said to me it feels cosy in here

I was stoked as that was exactly what i was going for, and to hear that from him was a big milestone for me as I want to achieve his vision for the shop too.

I have had so many compliments on how good it looks and feels

Everytime i add something or change something thats life taking us all on the ride as none of it was planned to an exact plan, I just start building and trust my skills

I can see my vision coming together and everyday I think of something new that will make it even better

And thats why im still here at now 6.30pm

My vision hasn't been achieved yet, i needed to take some photos ,move some things to see what it looked like, take more photos and soak it all in so life can guide me

And then write this post

I sit here writing, thinking, letting the words flow and i think to myself, wow ,I havent even finished yet

Im only just getting started

And that my friends is how my mind works

Goodnight Veggiefruiters

So loosing my keys this morning got the brain ticking

I spend a good part of my day walking around in circles looking for things

As I have a tendency to put things down in all sorts of weird spots

So today i built this contraption out of things i had laying around the shop

It holds everything i could possibly want in the shop

I just need a name for it now

Trevor the trolley ?

I want some suggestions

Post them in the comments ha ha
