Our garden is not just for food. By growing a diverse selection of food plants - alongside local indigenous plants and others chosen for their uses as dyes, medicines, fibres, animal feed or simply for the pleasure of their company - the garden becomes a beautiful, resilient haven for us, and for the local wildlife.
A new food plant is an invitation to the world. By planting a seed, then opening a book or browser, you can learn about the original custodians of the plant, its cultural significance and traditional preparation methods. Then you can watch it grow, with an added layer of joy in anticipating meals to come and the stories, seeds and cuttings you’ll share with your friends and family when your crop ripens.
Diversity adds much-needed resilience. This summer is forecasted to be difficult, and if you grow only one variety of tomato, leafy green or squash and it is susceptible to drought, a particular pest, cool weather or other vagaries, you may lose your crop. A diverse garden, in a difficult year, will always hold a few shining stars that defy the conditions to feed you, fill your vases and support little miracles such as this dear ladybird.
Diversity also gives you structure. A crop of climbing beans planted on the western side of a garden bed (in the southern hemisphere before you northerners correct me!) creates shade for tender lettuces and for heat-shy gardeners. A cover crop of fenugreek acts a living mulch for your tomatoes, flowers will bring ladybirds and their ilk to guard your bounty, and any spent plant left to stand will feed and shelter the creatures we share the land with.
This is a busy period for us, so we sadly can’t respond to every individual inquiry or hold things for you, even though we dearly want to get the plants of your dreams to you. We ship to eastern Aus, not out of the country or to WA or NT, and please check the quarantine restrictions in your local area before ordering. Thank you! 🌱
