Our Story
OUR HISTORY
In the early 1920’s James Crabb arrived from Scotland with only 10 pounds in his pocket. Apprenticed to a butcher, he became well known throughout the area delivering meat from a horse-drawn cart. However, the Great Depression challenged young Jim Crabb when he lost his job. He bought an old van and travelled the district. He fulfilled an important social link with those doing it tough and “Pay me when you can” became Jim’s motto.
Jim married Ada Giles in 1931 and they built a new general store with a house attached using their precious savings. The new shop opened in October 1934. From then on, Crabbs customer base expanded rapidly and competition was fierce. Jim joined others in the industry to develop and expand.
Free home delivery of groceries was a hallmark of Crabbs trade. Your perishables were put in your fridge if you weren’t home. He’d even post your mail on his way home! Crabbs of Kalamunda converted to a new wave self-service supermarket in the mid-1950s.
