Reminder: don't forget your POLYPHENOLS!
🫐🍒🍓

COLOUR = CHEMISTRY

Ever wondered what gives berries their typical bright blue, purple & red hues?
Berries are packed with a compound called ~anthocyanins~ the polyphenol pigments providing these beautiful, picture perfect colours.

Dark berries, like blueberries & blackberries, pack the biggest punch of anthocyanin polyphenols.

But polyphenols don't just paint a pretty picture, they help to create pretty guts & bodies more broadly too.

🦠GUT BUGGIES: your inbuilt CHEMISTRY LAB🦠

Polyphenols are actually pretty poorly absorbed... before they come into contact with our gut bacteria, that is.

Gut buggies love them, gobbling them up and converting them into other compounds that are linked with better mitochondrial function (cellular energy), muscle performance, immune regulation and the production of antiinflammatory compounds.

🤸‍♀️Here's a fact a find particularly fun🤸‍♀️

Because we all have different microbiomes... two people eating the same bowl of berries.. can produce entirely different polyphenol metabolites (depending on which species you've got in there).

🫐DIRECT EFFECTS ON GUT🫐

They serve as PRE-biotics, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and crowding out pathogens, over time bringing the gut back into harmony.

🧬SYSTEMIC EFFECTS🧬

So while it's near impossible to say exactly what they'll do for YOU... generally speaking, higher habitual berry intake is associated with:

🟣 lower blood pressure
🟣 improved blood vessel health
🟣 lower oxidative stress
🟣 sytemic antiinflammatory activity
🟣 lower all-cause mortality
🟣 type-2 diabetes risk reduction
🟣 slowing cognitive decline & neurodegeneration
🟣 improved lipid profiles
🟣 reduced weight gain and improved BMI
🟣 improved microbial compositions in the gut

A key feature of the classic Mediterranean diet - call me old school, but I'll forever hold this type of diet as a gold standard for optimal health.

PART 3: Microbiome Mapping Results

🧫🦠Beneficial Bacteria & the Gut-Skin Axis🦠🧫

Eczema, Dermatitis & Other Types of Skin Inflammation

Lactobacillus salivarius was just one of the 147 biomarkers we had a look at in this test.

A huge player in modulating the immune system to downregulate inflammation on the skin (not the only one, but certainly a significant one).

Just another simple example of why the beneficial bacteria in our gut cannot be overlooked if our goal is to have a body that is capable of self-regulation.

And why topical skin treatments alone might not be reaching the cause of your inflamed skin and delivering the results you're looking for.

The skin is an extension of the gut
Your skin is the symptom,
Your gut is the story.

PART 2: Microbiome Map Results

🦠🧫 The Significance of Healthy Populations of Beneficial Bacteria🧫🦠

Specificially: The Gut-Brain Axis, ADHD & Nervous System Regulation.

And: Inflammation, Immune Regulation & Autoimmunity.

Everything in the body is a two-way street and It's always a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? 🐔🐣

Regardless, without first considering & restoring our beneficial bacteria, we will forever be running round in circles & fighting an uphill battle with other treatments.
* Should these interventions be required, we should also consider concurrent strategies to mitigate damage to the gut lining & preserve the beneficial bacteria.

A tale of caution for jumping in with antibiotic & herbal antimicrobial treatments without first knowing exactly what you're working with & targeting.

A reminder of the importance of eating a balanced & diverse, whole food diet as a strategy to conserve & protect these important populations.

Prevention is always easier than repair, but thankfully, both are possible.

At it again with the 4 ingredient crepes - this time make it savoury!

Still used 4 x eggs + 1/4 cup almond meal but replaced the vanilla and cinnamon with moroccan spice & sage.
(Somehow they seem eggier than yesterday 🤷‍♀️)

Yesterday's sweet breakfast crepes served as inspo for today's lunch.
Filled with sauted garlic, lemon mushrooms & kale, haloumi, avo & spinach (& mayo and fig chutney)

In clinic we've been doing a little food psychology and re-framing our meal planning to banish this idea of "breakfast foods", "lunch foods" and eating whatever whenever.

Most people tend to eat a pretty good dinner but get tripped up with choosing good breakfast & snack foods, knowing what to replace toast & sandwiches for lunch with...

A lot of this is because we've been programmed to think there are certain categories of foods for certain times of the day.

Left over slow cooked meat & veg for breaky?
Start the day with a cuppa bone broth soup??
Why the hell not?

4 Ingredient Crepes

🥞 4 Eggs
🥞 1/4 cup almond flour
🥞 vanilla extract
🥞 cinnamon

* I did add honey to my mix but probably not necessary. - oh, and a pinch of sea salt.

Mix, cook on medium-high, top with whatever you like!

1) Simple honey & cinnamon - heavy on the cinnamon 😉

2) Greek yoghurt, mixed berries & granola

Or easy to make these savoury with some sauted mushrooms & spinach, fresh avo, veggies of your choice... bacon... salmon... chicken...

Get creative, go nuts!

I am a BIG FAN of analogies & visuals when it comes to explaining the complexities of holistic, systems-based health.

~Because it's bloody complex & who doesn't love a little story time.

This one was used many times in this morning's consult to explain why previous strategies haven't worked & why it's so important we search for and address the ROOT CAUSE.

This is also why following the generalised recommendations that circulate like plagues in online spaces - the ones that sound like "this herb treats this" and "this supplement is good for that" - might not be delivering the long term success you're seeking.

Buying & self-prescribing remedies online is like buying more buckets and mops - they might help clean up the mess a bit... for a while...

Discussing your entire health history, little nuances around your presenting complaints, using pathology and testing, and seeking support from a naturopath, is like calling a plumber to fix the leaking pipe.

If you've ever said: "I've tried all the natural stuff and nothing works" but you've never actually sat down in consult with an experienced & qualified naturopath... it might not be the natural stuff that doesn't work, but the philosophy and approach behind it's application.

Whole foods, variety, colour, protein, healthy fats and complex carbs - the foundations & goals remain the same across the board - but I help clients find a nutritional focal point to build their meals around, specific to their needs, meeting them exactly where they are currently at.

We've been creating personalised food philosophy handouts this week in clinic helping clients to identify specific aspects of their diet we can modify and give simple strategies to begin building food habits that support their broader treatment plans & prescriptions (in ways that are not overwhelming and doesn't require an enormous diet overhaul all at once).

This may look like:

💫Batch cooking to freeze and simple pre-prepared meals (veggie fritters, patties, quiche, frittata, overnight oats and chia puddings) for busy or burnt out peeps where cooking every day feels like a chore and nutrient-density is suffering as a result.

💫Focus on the sensory experience of cooking & eating: helping re-train the nervous system back into "rest & digest" by engaging the senses (smelling, chewing) to stimulate secretions (saliva, acid, enzymes, bile) rather than guzzling down some powder in water on the run keeping the bodies energy & circulation diverted away from the gut (fight or flight).

💫Temporarily reducing the digestive demand on an inflamed, dysbiotic & highly reactive system with well-cooked, healing foods & simple food pairings (broths, soups, slow cooked meals, gut-healing congee), avoidance of raw, difficult to digest plant fibres creating excess gas, pain & bloating while we prioritise repair, regeneration & microbiome mapping test results.

💫 Targetted recipes & focus foods to increase daily intake of a specific nutrient found to be suboptimal in pathology results where dietary intake has been lacking (like my iron right now!)

Holistic health goes far beyond the prescription.

We work towards long term lifestyle changes, increased self-awareness & nutritional education for optimised health & sustained wellness.

Need some help & support?
Please get in touch for a consult, I'd be happy to help 😊
