After 5 weeks it’s time for the babies to be graded.

In photo 2 they are our front runners, the front runners will go into baskets and back into the River.

In photo 3 they are our slow growers, the slow growers will go back into the socks (which is shown in the first photo) for another chance to become front runners.

The reason we separated the Front runners & slow growers is for better chance of survival.

In the 4th photo your can see the farmers sorting & grading the oysters, in the last video it shows a sneak peek into a little bit of the process.

The rain these last 6-8 weeks has been cripperling for us and all other farmers on the Hawkesbury river

We thought it would be nice to share a little bit about how the rain affects Oyster Farming here on the Hawkesbury river as Estuaries have different guidelines to follow

Just for context

Once the Hawkesbury river Estuary gets more than 25mls of rain in a 24hr period it shuts automatically

Fresh water affects the salinity levels & there are certain salinity levels & rigid testing that takes place before Department of Primary industry’s open the river to be able to harvest.

We also get the fresh water overflow from Warragmaba dam when they open it up to. It all flows down stream to us

This means if the river is closed we can’t harvest oysters from our Esturies so we have to buy them in.

Oysters are a divine delicacy that are enjoyed by many. They are also so vital to our eco system as they filter the water & without them we wouldn’t have clean easturies.

From 5am Wednesday till 11am today we had 113.2ml of rain. Yes 11.32 cms of rain in a 30hr period.

SO after the river being closed for 8 weeks it opened for harvest for less than 24hrs.
Barely enough time to get much out of the river at all. Tides need to match up with daylight also so we can access our leases to harvest as low tide is required and this picture here was a high tide of 1.5meters at 10am

So for this week & until the river opens we will continue to source Oysters to keep our doors open from our friends who are on Estuaries that are open for Harvest

Say a little pray for all the Oyster Farmers over the state who want the rain fairies to wave their magic wand so the rain stops
