This morning reminded me how important gratitude is.
When I was growing up, the supermarkets shut at 5:00 or 5:30. They opened Saturday morning, closed around lunchtime, and didn’t open again until Monday.
Back then, weekends often looked different. Families gathered. People packed a picnic, went for a drive, visited grandparents, or simply spent time together. Those moments created memories that lasted a lifetime.
As life has become busier, so have we. Longer trading hours, shift work and businesses opening seven days a week have become normal. We barely notice it anymore.
This morning, I needed one small thing from the supermarket. It wasn’t urgent—I could have waited—but I ducked in anyway. As I walked through the doors, I found myself feeling grateful.
Grateful that someone had opened those doors before most of us were awake.
Grateful that while I was going about my morning, there were people who had already left their families, put on their uniforms and gone to work so that my life could be a little more convenient.
We often talk about gratitude for the big things in life, but perhaps it’s the little things that deserve our attention too.
The cashier who smiles.
The baker who starts before dawn.
The cleaner who arrives before everyone else.
The truck driver who stocked the shelves overnight.
The small business owners who work long hours so their community has what it needs.
So today, I’m simply choosing gratitude.
Because behind almost every convenience we enjoy is someone quietly making a sacrifice we rarely see.
Maybe all any of us really need is to notice those little acts a little more often.🙏
