ONE MORE. THEN IT GETS PERSONAL.

It’s been a cracking few weeks of rugby.

The Boks lead the All Blacks 2–1, which means South Africans will explain why the series is already won, New Zealanders why it isn’t, and by Saturday night somebody will have explained the laws to the referee.

Again.

Meanwhile, somewhere on WhatsApp, a bloke who last played rugby in Year 8 has picked a better side than all the coaches.

Wonderful stuff.

Different jerseys. Same arguments.

Then the argument moves closer to home.

Wallabies v Springboks. Optus Stadium. 27 September.

The Boks are coming to Perth.
The Wallabies have been winning.
There’ll be green and gold everywhere, although not necessarily supporting the same team.

Bragging rights. Old loyalties. A few friendships on the line.

And absolutely no chance everyone agrees on the referee.

I remember when my boy was five.

The school bag looked almost as big as he was. He'd jump out of the car, reach up for my hand and expect me to walk him through the school gate.

I was always busy. Something to finish, a phone ringing, a meeting waiting. I probably thought there'd be hundreds more mornings just like that one.

He's 20 now.

Somewhere along the way, he stopped reaching for my hand. I couldn't tell you which morning was the last one. That's the thing about the moments that matter. They rarely announce themselves.

Life is busy. It was busy then and it's busy now. And that's alright.

But make time.

For your dad. For your children. For the people who matter.

Sit around the table a little longer. Cook something good. Open the bottle. Tell the old story again. Ask another question. Invite someone over. Go back to the places that mean something. Be curious about the person sitting opposite you.

Perhaps these aren't things we need to find more time for.

Perhaps they're what the time was for in the first place.

Happy Father's Day. Make a day of it.

FUNNY WHERE LIFE TAKES YOU
Every now and then, someone you knew pops up somewhere rather extraordinary.

For us, that person is Byron Kimber.

Byron worked at Cape to Cairo when he was young, back when swimming was already becoming a serious part of his life. We watched a little of that story from the sidelines, without knowing quite where it might lead.

At 15, he and William Rollo smashed the Port to Pub duo record. Another record followed with Bec Weller at 16.

Then came Rotto. Fifth in 2021. Third in 2023, breaking the previous race record, and third again in 2025.

This year, Byron finished second in the 10km and third in the 5km at the South African Open Water Championships.

And this month, the South African-born, WA-based swimmer took another rather special step, representing his country of birth at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships in California.

We remember the young man who worked alongside us all those years ago. Seeing where his determination and talent have taken him has been rather special.

Well done, Byron. We’re enormously proud of you and will be cheering from this side of the Indian Ocean.

SHOW YOUR COLOURS. 💚💛
The Boks are coming to Perth.

Which means it’s time to get properly kitted out.

Springbok caps. Beanies. Scarves. Stubbie holders. Kit bags. And the socks to finish the job.

Useful? Absolutely. Subtle? Not remotely.

27 September. Wallabies v Springboks. Optus Stadium.

And when the heavy artillery arrives from the Bok bench, there should be no confusion about which side you’re on.

Green. Gold. Head to toe if necessary.

ART WORTH A DETOUR
I’ve loved Leanne Pearson’s work for years, particularly her paintings of families.

Children on the beach, people together, those wonderfully ordinary moments we barely notice at the time but somehow remember years later. She captures light and movement beautifully, and her paintings often feel less like portraits and more like memories.

But there’s another side to Leanne’s work.

An accomplished plein-air painter, she takes her easel outdoors and paints what unfolds around her, working with shifting light, colour, weather and movement.

Leanne’s story began in Zimbabwe, but these days Western Australia provides much of her inspiration. This Saturday, she joins the invited guest artists in Spirit of the Landscape at the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery.

It’s quite different from the family paintings I love, which is perhaps exactly why I’m looking forward to seeing it.

ON THE TOPIC OF SPRINGBOKS, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE LABEL
One of our favourite Great Southern estates has another reason to celebrate.

Singlefile W**es recently took Gold for the third consecutive year in the Tourism W**eries, Distilleries & Breweries category at the WA Tourism Awards.

Next time you visit, take a closer look at the crest. There’s a springbok hiding in plain sight.

Set among the forests and cool-climate vineyards of Denmark, Singlefile is one of the Great Southern’s highly regarded family-owned w**eries. The Snowden family’s story stretches back to Zimbabwe and South Africa before eventually finding its home here in Western Australia.

That springbok on the crest is a quiet nod to their southern African story. The stag represents son-in-law Patrick Corbett’s Irish birthplace. And the three geese? They’re the locals, inspired by the geese that wander the property in single file.

Today, Singlefile produces w**es representing all five Great Southern subregions: Denmark, Albany, Porongurup, Mount Barker and Frankland River. It has also been named WA Producer of the Year by w**e critic Ray Jordan.

Beautiful setting, excellent w**e and a rather lovely story behind the label.

BOKS WIN. BRAAI ON. 🔥
Well, that was fun. 33–26. Series level. Blood pressure absolutely not.

The All Blacks were brilliant with ball in hand and somehow still managed to score four tries to the Boks’ three. McKenzie, Jordan, Roigard, Savea… give them half a gap and suddenly everyone’s running backwards wondering what just happened.

But this week the Boks remembered the basics.

Eben made a nuisance of himself at the line-out. De Allende chose the direct route. Siya came back and scored. Cheslin Kolbe apparently decided missing kicks was optional.

And then Rassie, with five minutes left before half-time, looked at a five-metre scrum and sent on Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche. Which seems unnecessarily rude.

Scrum. Penalty. Scrum. Retreating All Blacks. Siya over.

New Zealand came roaring back, because of course they always do, but the Springboks held on.

33–26. Bok-lash delivered.

Right. Enough analysis.

Congratulations on last weekend. 🇳🇿

33–16. Five tries. Twelve-match Bok winning streak ended.
We know you’ve enjoyed yourselves. Fair enough.

Put the score on the fridge. Tell the neighbours. Ring your mother. Have another flat white. 😂 Because now we do it all again.

Cape Town.
Siya’s back. Cheslin’s back. Sacha’s at 10.
And somewhere in the Springboks camp, you suspect the forwards have been quietly discussing the matter.

That should worry a few people.

The All Blacks will bring what they do so beautifully: pace, instinct, ridiculous handling and that irritating ability to turn half a gap into seven points before we’ve finished shouting at the television.

The Boks?

Probably something a little more subtle.

Scrum. Maul. Eben. Repeat.

Then, just when everyone is sufficiently uncomfortable, introduce an Ox Nche-shaped problem.

Apparently, there’s a “Bok-lash” coming.

Maybe.

That’s the beauty of this rivalry. Nothing is guaranteed. Nobody stays down for long. And for 80 minutes, none of us will behave remotely normally.

The Kiwis have the bragging rights.

For now.

Enjoy them. Savour them. Just perhaps don’t get too attached. 😉

So, to our Kiwi cousins, good luck.

Genuinely, we love you. We respect you.

BEFORE THE TACKLES, THE TRIES AND WHATEVER CHAOS ELLIS PARK HAS PLANNED… 🇿🇦🇳🇿🔥
They’re calling it Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.

The Springboks have the muscle.

The All Blacks have that irritating habit of turning half a chance into seven points.

Ellis Park will be heaving.

So expect scrums. Expect collisions. Expect 80 minutes of insisting the referee has clearly misunderstood the laws of rugby. 😂

And whatever you do, don’t assume dominating the scrum means you’ve won the game.

That would be awkward.

Our advice? Control the controllables.

🥩 Steak on the fire.
🥖 Bread toasted.
🔥 Sauce ready.
🍺 Something cold within reach.

Because once that whistle blows, dinner is no longer the priority.
