When one of our employees asked about an engraving in the concrete at the back of shop, I take off my Grocer’s hat and put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and get to work!
Here’s what we know:
1. The original building was built in 1963 which is the higher section with the large jarrah beams that you can see when you’re inside.
2. The original building also had a huge bullnose veranda which in the mid 80’s was partially enclosed with a flat facade where our outside signs are located today. Inside the shop where the veranda was, is now enclosed with a low ceiling.
3. Then we believe a few years later, in the late 80’s, the outside concrete for the back loading bay and the side were installed and this is where the engraving takes place.
4. So on the 11th of February 1989, the son of Romano Nanni (the owner of the building and the owner of Romano’s Deli) engraved his name Nick and the date into wet concrete all those years ago.
5. Case closed! Now I’ll go back to being The Grocer!
