Today is World Bee Day! ๐Ÿ

How do you contribute to the preservation of bees and other pollinators? Here are some ideas:

๐ŸŒบ Plant nectar-bearing flowers for decorative purposes on balconies, terraces, and gardens.
๐Ÿฏ Buy honey from a local beekeeper.
๐ŸŒด Set up a pollinator farm or โ€˜bee hotelโ€ on your balcony, terrace, or garden.
๐ŸŒ… Mow your lawn in the evening when bees are no longer foraging.
๐Ÿช Encourage mixed species lawns and nature strips that include clover and other flowers and allow them to flower before mowing.

From Adelaide to Iceland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ
And of course, Joel found the bees ๐Ÿ

While visiting Friรฐheimar Tomato Farm in Iceland, we got to see some fluffy bumblebees! Theyโ€™re not just cute; theyโ€™re essential to how the farm works.

Friรฐheimar grows tomatoes year-round in a greenhouse using geothermal energy, tapping into Icelandโ€™s natural underground heat to create a warm, controlled environment, even in the middle of winter.

Inside these boxes are bumblebee colonies, brought in to pollinate the plants. They use a technique called โ€œbuzz pollination,โ€ vibrating the flowers to release pollen; something we see from native bees in Australia too. In a place like Iceland, where the natural pollination season is short, this system makes all the difference.

Itโ€™s incredible to see how bees are supporting food production on the other side of the world - different climate, same vital role ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ…

Check out the queen bee in the video ๐Ÿ‘‘ Sheโ€™s massive ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Significantly larger than European honeybee queens!

๐Ÿ IMPORTANT UPDATE ๐Ÿ

As you may have heard, the Varroa mite has now reached South Australia. This tiny pest has huge impacts on honey bees, and like beekeepers across the country, weโ€™re taking action to protect our hives.

Our current focus is increased monitoring and learning. When the mites have been introduced to our hives, to keep our bees healthy, weโ€™ll be implementing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, which involves cultural and mechanical controls, more frequent hive checks, and, when needed, carefully managed treatments.

Unfortunately, these changes will increase the cost of producing our honey, and weโ€™ll need to introduce some small price adjustments in the new year.

Thank you for your understanding and support while we navigate through what will be a challenging period.
