🥦 Meet Romanesco: Nature’s Fractal Wonder
Have you ever seen a vegetable that looks like it belongs in a maths textbook? Romanesco, often called the “world’s trippiest vegetable”, certainly lives up to the title!
With its striking spiral fractal pattern and perfectly repeating florets, Romanesco is one of nature’s most fascinating creations. Its unique appearance can be so unusual that some people shy away from it at first glance—but once you see it up close, it’s hard not to be amazed. (Take a look at the photo above!)
A Vegetable with Italian Roots
Romanesco originated in the Lazio region of Italy, and its name reflects its Roman heritage. Historical records trace this remarkable vegetable back to the 16th century, when it was grown as a regional specialty.
As gardening traditions spread around the world, Romanesco seeds found their way across continents and into the hands of enthusiastic growers. We’re delighted to have some beautiful organic Romanesco in store at New Harvest this week and last week.
What Exactly Is Romanesco?
Romanesco is often described as an heirloom cauliflower, sometimes called a broccoflower. It belongs to the brassica family, alongside broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and kohlrabi.
Its flavour sits somewhere between broccoli and cauliflower, with many people noticing a mild, nutty sweetness that makes it especially enjoyable.
Cooking with Romanesco
Romanesco is wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. Simply steam it and drizzle with olive oil and lemon for a classic preparation, or toss it through your favourite pasta dish.
Its subtle nutty flavour also shines in:
Roasted vegetable trays
Hearty soups
Herb-infused dishes
Warm curries and spiced meals
Whether served as a side or featured as the star ingredient, Romanesco brings both flavour and visual appeal to the table.
If you’ve never tried this extraordinary vegetable before, now is the perfect opportunity to discover one of nature’s most beautiful edible creations.
