Celebrating the International Year of Women Farmers

Meet Gabrielle Robb, known to many as “The Orange Lady,” a citrus grower from Red Cliffs, Victoria. For more than 25 years, Gabrielle has travelled hundreds of kilometres each week to bring tree-ripened citrus directly from her family orchard to farmers’ markets, building lasting connections with customers and championing local food systems.

Together with her family, Gabrielle has nurtured a thriving farm based on care for the land, sustainable growing practices, and a commitment to quality. Her work has also inspired the next generation, with her children continuing to strengthen and support Victoria’s farmers’ market community.

This year, we celebrate women like Gabrielle, whose dedication, resilience, and leadership help grow stronger communities and more sustainable food systems.

It’s our first market of June, and the stalls are filling with some of the best seasonal produce our region has to offer.

At this time of year you’ll find plenty of citrus fruits, apples and pears, along with vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, silverbeet, kale, spinach, carrots, beetroot and pumpkins.

Shopping with the seasons means enjoying produce when it’s at its best while supporting the local farmers who grow it.

Whether you’re picking up your weekly fruit and veg, stocking the pantry, or catching up with friends over a coffee, there’s always something special to discover at the market.

Join us on the 7th at the South Geelong Farmers Market and celebrate the flavours of June with our local growers and makers.

Have you seen the giant cultured butter wheels by at the South Geelong Farmers Market yet? It’s always on my list of must haves!

A full wheel of cultured butter means less small plastic tubs, less wrapping, less production waste, and less transport packaging moving through the system.

Cultured butter has a richer flavour and softer texture from the fermentation process. Small batch production means more care in how it’s made. Grass-fed artisan style butter supports a slower, more connected food system. And buying a full wheel means far less packaging waste than constantly buying small wrapped blocks.

The best part is you don’t need to use it all at once. Most people cut the wheel into sections, keep one in the fridge, and store the rest in the freezer to use over time.

If you’re already buying quality organic or cultured butter, buying in bulk like this can actually be a more conscious choice for the environment and your wallet.

More connection to where your food comes from.
Less unnecessary waste.

And honestly… a giant wheel of butter just feels a little romantic too.
