Watermelon has redeemed itself... but basil has other ideas. 🍉🌿

Last week's watermelon quality issues are behind us, with Northern Territory fruit now cutting beautifully and back to its best. Meanwhile, winter is starting to flex its muscles, with basil, sage and leafy greens all feeling the effects of cold mornings and recent rain.

The good news? Broccolini is outstanding buying, Werribee South broccoli and cauliflower are excellent, Brussels sprouts are back, blood limes are still turning heads, and Queensland strawberries continue to improve.

On the watch list, avocados are climbing again, premium oranges are becoming harder to find, herbs are under pressure, and eggs have nudged up as supply tightens.

Mandarins are sweet, apples are in season, but transport costs are starting to bite.

This week’s Melbourne wholesale fruit and veg market has a solid seasonal fruit story, with mandarins eating well, apples and pears in full swing, melons improving and citrus starting to open up.

Imperial and Afourer mandarins are eating well, Sunraysia navels are starting to soften in price as flavour improves, and the main apple varieties are now in season.

The catch is cost. Apples and pears are dearer than last year, with lighter crops, earlier weather challenges and higher fuel and transport costs all feeding into pricing.

On the vegetable side, Werribee broccoli is in great shape, Queensland capsicums are finally moving properly, and there are plenty of excellent Australian greens available.

Strawberries, blueberries, mushrooms and potatoes still need careful buying, with supply and quality pressure sitting across those lines.
