🆕 For the Love of Bread: Sonoma Bakery

Sonoma Bakery is one of Australia’s celebrated sourdough bakeries, founded by Andrew Connole, alongside his brother Christian and their late father Kerry.

As a young boy, Kerry Connole spent time watching a local baker work behind his grandparents' general store in Bellata, a tiny outback town in north-western New South Wales. Decades later, despite having zero professional baking experience, Kerry was driven by nostalgia to lease and restore that same derelict, 100-year-old wood-fired oven.

While setting up the bakery, Andrew Connole travelled to the United States. He visited Northern California, exploring the artisan sourdough movement in San Francisco and learning from legendary oven maker Alan Scott in the Sonoma region. Andrew returned to Australia with a small batch of authentic sourdough starter and named the fledgling business "Sonoma" in honour of the place that inspired him.

The family baked their first official commercial loaves in Bellata. Because the remote town had a population of only 500, Andrew made the gruelling, 1080-kilometer round trips to transport the fresh bread from the outback to sell at Sydney's farmers markets.

Demand exploded. Sonoma eventually shifted its core operations to Sydney, opening a major production headquarters in Alexandria and establishing popular retail cafes across New South Wales and Canberra. They became a signature supplier for top-tier Sydney restaurants (like Quay and Tetsuya's) and a staple at the Carriageworks Farmers Market.
A limited range of sourdoughs and mueslis is now available from Box Divvy.

Seasonal Spotlight 🔦

🍍 They’re back: Pines Papaya and Pash

Tropical Queensland hasn’t been its natural self for a few years now: unusual weather stress caused premature flowering events in pineapple crops, first in 2022 (causing a glut in 2023), and then again in 2025, especially in South-East Queensland. There was an initial flush earlier this year, followed by severe shortages. That’s the bad news. The good news? Supply and prices are slowly easing between now and Christmas, but “full industry production may not return until 2028”, according to Anthony Dobson from Tropical Pines. Why so long? Pineapples can take up to 2 years to produce their first fruit…

By-the-way: passionfruit is good value, but please note that the skin will have some leaf rub marks. That does not impact on the eating quality or shelf life at all.

🥬 Baby buk choi from George Portelli at $1.50

Heavy supply of Asian Greens, driven by warm spring weather, is pushing prices down. George wants you to buy loads of these tender baby buk choi, and has reduced the price to $1.50 a bunch. That’s literally half the price you’ll find in Colesworth.

🥕 Going Dutch has never been this cheap

Carrots love spring, with the warmer nights spurring on root growth. Pick ‘m, or they bolt - so they are in abundance right now. From one of Xerri’s neighbours: $2 a bunch.

🥔 Speaking of dirt: how about a 2kg bag of brushed Sebagos for $3? Dirt cheap.

🥦 What’s better than a bunch of broccolini?
Three bunches! Especially when they’re only $5.

Price Rollback and Divvy Picks

🥬 Iceberg lettuce 89c each

Box Divvy iceberg lettuce is 89¢ a head — the same price as 44 years ago.

Grown by Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks, where the Nepean River flows into the Hawkesbury. He has so many lettuces, he’s sending them to Melbourne and Brisbane. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Pardon the pun.

🍌 Bananas 57c ea

Warmer weather is bringing on the fruit. Bananas are normally the biggest selling of all fruits, but the past few weeks have seen some stiff competition from berries - and mangoes are not far away either. So the banana growers in both Queensland and Coffs are bending over backwards (get it? get it?) to get you to buy more.

🫐 Blueberries $2.90/punnet or $16/6 punnets or $30/12 punnets

Speaking of Perfect Timing: now that we are past the strawberry peak, it's blueberries' turn: just $2.90 a punnet. Loads of antioxidants and anthocyanins to soup up your smoothie or Greek yoghurt.

🥦 Broccoli $2 ea

Manuel Xerri - yes HIM again - is picking copious numbers of broccoli heads - rather large ones - which are going out the door at $4 a kilo. Yes, Spring is the air - and Spring is in Manuel’s footsteps.

These baby truss tomatoes are truly fruits of nature barely touched or processed, apart from Marguerite’s polishings, smelling glorious and full of nutrients as nature intended.

I am so glad to have shifted most of my shopping over to Box Divvy, limiting my exposure to ultra processed foods lining aisles after aisles, clever marketing strategies that speak right to me as a mum wanting the best for my child.

But are their claims true?

Are they truly healthy and nourishing for my child and my family?

With the help of Nabs from Supermarket Swap, I can confidently turn the boxes over and decipher the ingredients list knowing which box should get back onto the shelf and which can come with me. There’s always better options for most items.

If you’re intrigued, the upcoming Spotlight Investigation by 7News this Sunday 8.45pm is one not to be missed. Check out the preview 👇🏻

🆕 J.C.'s Quality Foods Australian Oats 🌾

Oats are important in maintaining optimal gut biome. We already sell organic rolled oats in the H2G range, but we can now offer a better value option with these 750g bags of Australian rolled oats and quick oats. They are less than half price compared with the Australian-grown H2G oats.

This coastal honey has a beautiful, sweet flavour; it is mid to darker in colour and slightly thinner and runnier than inland honey.

This is 100% raw, unfiltered honey sourced by 2 Pops at Caves Beach.

Seasonal Spotlight 🔦

Early spring weather is bringing on the vegetables

Many of our Sydney basin growers are reporting earlier-than-usual bumper crops - from cabbages to lettuces and everything in between.

What’s behind this phenomenon? An early and sudden outbreak of spring weather.

🥬 Iceberg lettuce crop

Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks wasn’t expecting to pick his Iceberg lettuces until mid-September, but especially mild nights have brought the harvest forward by several weeks. The glut is pushing prices down below $2 a head, and they could go even lower in the coming weeks.

🍇 Speaking of early: seedless table grapes!

Australian grapes from Emerald in QLD usually don’t start until late October, so when we spotted Australian-grown grapes we got suspicious - until we found out that North Queensland (around Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands) has basically created a new growing region for grapes.

It’s part of the “Import Replacement Program” aimed at replacing Californian grapes that come into Australia from July to November, and are sold through the major supermarkets and Harris Farm.

This is smart - and we’re likely to see more of it as changing weather patterns force some commodities to shift to different locales, but also offer opportunities to start growing new varieties.

For example, we are seeing more growers on the NSW Mid Coast starting to plant papaya and mango, traditionally confined to Queensland.

So yes: they are now listed on Marketplace: Australian-grown grapes for under $20 a kilo.

Divvy Picks

🍓 Strawberries $3.50/500g punnet or $19/4kg trays

Have we reached Peak Strawberries? We think so - but the weather in Caboolture is still excellent: temperatures in the low 20's and no rain on the horizon, so they'll keep picking until there's nothing left.

The 500g Jumbo punnet is $3.50, but if you want to share them with the ‘hood, or make some more jam, 4kg trays are going for just $19 (but bear in mind: the fruit is on the smaller side, and not as uniformly beautiful as the premium fruit. But equally delicious).

🍊 Blood oranges 69c ea

Blood oranges are in excellent supply this week. They tend to peak on the cusp of winter and spring, which is just about…now. The cassis and spice flavours makes every blood orange a little adventure.

🥦 Broccolini $2 ea

Have you ever tried to roast broccolini in the oven? They turn beautifully crisp. Just preheat it to 220°C. Trim the tough ends of the stems, toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper on a baking sheet in a single layer, and roast for 12 to 15 minutes until the stems are tender and florets are crisp.
