“The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.”
– Bill Mollison

Bill Mollison, co-founder of permaculture, is reminding us that real change begins with practical action. Instead of relying solely on words, protests, or conflict, he emphasises shifting from being passive consumers to active producers. Even small acts of food production, like growing herbs, vegetables, or fruit in home gardens, create resilience, self-reliance, and abundance.

He suggests that if just a fraction of people (10%) took responsibility for growing some of their own food, we could collectively create security and abundance for everyone. In contrast, revolutionaries or critics who fail to build and provide tangible alternatives remain dependent on the very systems they oppose, making their efforts less effective.

True empowerment comes from creating, not destroying. By providing food, shelter, and systems of care, we move towards real and lasting change.

Preserve what’s in season or you can get that’s in abundance!
I say this in my workshops, there are so many ways to eat great food. Products that are not in season are likely to be imported. Australia is the lucky country when we consider we export so much of what we produce

1. What % of Australian-grown food do we export?
• Recent data from DAFF/ABARES indicates that around 70% of Australia’s agricultural, fisheries, and forestry production is exported each year. \
• This figure is confirmed across multiple sources and contexts. For example, 70% is referenced as a key benchmark in both industry updates and governmental messaging. \
• Earlier estimates from other sources range roughly between 65% to 72%—depending on the scope (total ag, forestry, fisheries, etc.) and timeframe. \
• So the best figure to quote today is: approximately 70% of Australia’s food/agricultural production is exported annually.

2. What % of food is imported when it’s out of season in Australia?

This question is trickier—because data for overall imports is available, but not specifically “out‑of‑season” food volumes or percentages. Here’s what we can draw from:
• In 2021–22, the value of food imports to Australia was A$24.3 billion, while exports were A$59.9 billion—meaning imports were about 40.6% of exports in value terms. \
• General trade statistics show that food & live animals comprise about 6.4% of total merchandise imports in 2024.

Members of the Agroecology Research-Action Collective argue against the productivist logic underlying the "feed-the-world" approaches to feed security.
