🌿 Bula vinaka Canberra fam & future movers!🇦🇺🇫🇯

Sorry I’ve been MIA — life got busy! But quick heads up as the cold is rolling in 🥶

🍂 Autumn in Canberra = tricky!
Sunny days, BUT freezing mornings & nights (single digits already 😬). And trust me… winter is MUCH colder.

🧥You’ll need ASAP:
Jackets, hoodies, thermals & thick blankets!

💰Cheap spots to shop:

* Kmart
* Target
* Vinnies (best bargains!)

🧣 Pro tip:Layer up! Warm in the day, cold in the evening — same day vibes 😅

Fiji heat won’t prepare you for this, but you’ll adjust quick! Stay warm ❤️

Let’s be real — working from home with a baby isn’t always “easy”… but some jobs make it a lot more doable. Here are 3 that can actually pay you while you juggle mum life:

1️⃣ Freelance Writing
If you can write simple posts, captions, or articles, you can get paid. Many businesses are always looking for content, and you can work during nap times or late at night.

2️⃣ Virtual Assistant (VA)
Helping businesses with emails, scheduling, or social media. Tasks are usually flexible, and you don’t need a degree to start — just basic organisation skills.

3️⃣ Selling Digital Products
Think planners, templates, or simple guides. Create it once, sell it over and over again — perfect when your time is limited.

✨ The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress. Even a few hours a day can turn into real income over time.

Which one would you try first? 👇🏽

First time in Canberra as a Fijian 🇫🇯… and let me tell you — I thought I was ready for the cold, but Canberra said “nah, try again” 😭😂

Coming from island life where food is fresh, cheap, and everywhere… I was stressed thinking I’d have to survive on overpriced supermarket stuff. But honestly? Canberra lowkey has some solid spots if you know where to look 👀

If you’re like me — trying to cook proper island food (fish, dalo vibes, fresh veg, big family meals) without going broke — here are the BEST cheap market spots I’ve found so far:

🥬 Top 3 cheapest markets for produce

1. Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets
This place is the GOAT. Proper market vibes, heaps of fruit + veg, meat AND seafood all in one spot. You can literally do your whole shop here. Go late on Sunday and you might even catch discounts 👀
(Local secret: some stalls drop prices before closing)

2. Belconnen Fresh Food Markets
If you’re northside, this is your spot. Good mix of produce, butcher, and seafood. Way cheaper than some supermarkets if you shop smart.

3. Capital Region Farmers Market, Canberra
Bit more “fresh & local” vibes — straight from farmers. Not always the absolute cheapest, but prices can be really good for seasonal stuff, and the quality is elite.

🐟 Best seafood spots (cheap + fresh)

* Sea Harvest Fyshwick Market
Fresh seafood straight from the coast — prawns, fish, oysters, everything. Known for quality and good value in Canberra.

* Fishco Fish Market
Another solid option in Fyshwick. Good prices if you compare and shop around.

* Bros seafood
Hidden gem inside Fyshwick — smaller, but sometimes better deals depending on the day.

💭 Real talk — Canberra isn’t Fiji. You won’t get your normal “Ta” or Saqa, so you better speed up on learning their scientific names in order to find them 😂 but if you hit these markets, you can still cook proper island meals without destroying your wallet.

Biggest tip?
👉 Go early for freshness OR late for discounts
👉 Buy seasonal
👉 Don’t be shy to compare stalls

Island people, we adapt anywhere 🇫🇯💪
Even in Canberra cold ❄️😂

Sea Harvest is a Canberra-based fresh seafood market at Belconnen and Fyshwick markets, offering a wide variety of seafood at the very best prices.

We’re slowly starting to settle into life in Canberra 🇦🇺 and getting into our little routines. One thing we had to figure out quickly was where to grocery shop without spending too much.

After trying a few places, here are 3 supermarkets we’ve been going to the most because they’re affordable.

🛒 ALDI Australia
This has probably been our favourite for saving money. We usually get most of our basics here — fruits, vegetables, snacks, and pantry items. Prices are often noticeably cheaper.

🛒 Coles
We go here when we can’t find something at ALDI. They have lots of options and if you catch their weekly specials, you can get really good deals.

🛒 Woolworths
Another place we stop by depending on what we need. Their home-brand products are quite affordable and the quality is pretty good too.

We’re still learning the little tricks of living here, but figuring out where to shop has definitely helped us feel a bit more settled.

If you live in Canberra, we’d love to know — where do you usually do your grocery shopping?🛍️

Bula!!

I just anded in Canberra… and my first 24 hours were a shock.

Leaving Fiji was emotional. Warm weather. Family. Noise. Laughter.

Then I arrived in Canberra…

Cold air hit me immediately 🥶
Everything was quiet.
People everywhere — but nobody talking.

Here’s what happened in my first 24 hours:

1️⃣ I realised nothing works without paperwork.
You need a TFN from the Australian Taxation Office before you can work. I didn’t know how important that was.

2️⃣ The cold is REAL.
Coming from Fiji heat to Canberra winter is not a joke. First thing I needed? A proper jacket.

3️⃣ I understood one thing fast — community matters.
Finding other Fijians here made a huge difference.

Moving countries is exciting… but it’s also lonely at first.

🌺 Bula vinaka everyone!🇫🇯🇦🇺

Welcome to From Fiji to Canberra — a page created for Fijian families making the big move to Canberra for the very first time.

We moved here as a big family ourselves, and we know how overwhelming it can feel — from finding the right place to live, figuring out schools, understanding the system, and even knowing where to shop for affordable groceries (and where to find those island favourites! 😄).

This page is here to share the things we’ve learned along the way — the tips, the mistakes, the helpful places, and the little things that made settling in easier for our family.

If you’re planning your move or have just arrived, you’re not alone. Let’s share, support each other, and build our Fijian community here in Canberra.

Vinaka vakalevu & welcome to your new journey! 🌺
