From Opportunity to Leadership - Meet Alice 🐟

At Rio Fish, we believe growth is not just about scaling operations - it is about growing people.

Alice’s journey is a powerful reflection of that belief.

She started with us over 8 years ago as part of our HQ support team. Today, she leads our Migori depot sales team - equipped with the skills, certifications, and experience needed to deliver quality, safe, and reliable fish to her community.

From cold storage management to hygiene and handling standards, Alice ensures that every customer receives fresh, high-quality fish. But beyond that, she is doing something even more impactful - taking her community’s nutrition into her own hands.

Her story is one of consistency, growth, and opportunity. It reflects what can happen when young people are given the space, support, and structure to step into leadership.

At Rio Fish, we are committed to building pathways for youth - especially those historically left out of agriculture and aquaculture - to not only participate, but lead.

Because when our people grow, our communities thrive.

Harvesting for the Easter Rush 🐟

Last Thursday, our team was on the ground at the farm - at the cages and along the cold chain - working to meet the increased demand that comes with the Easter season.

Easter is a time when families come together, and food sits at the center of those moments. For us, that means being ready - harvesting at the right time, handling with care, and ensuring our fish moves efficiently from water to market.

From the cages, where the fish are carefully harvested, to the cold chain trucks that preserve freshness and quality, every step matters. It is a coordinated effort that reflects the strength of our systems and the dedication of our team.

This is what building a reliable aquaculture value chain looks like - planning ahead, responding to demand, and delivering quality when it matters most.

As you get back into the flow of things after Easter weekend, we are proud and grateful to be part of the journey that brings nutritious, high-quality protein to your tables.

Good Friday Reflection

Today is a moment to pause.

In the middle of building, growing, and pushing forward, Good Friday reminds us of the power of sacrifice, patience, and purpose. That meaningful change - whether in our communities, our businesses, or ourselves - often comes through quiet resilience and unwavering commitment.

At Rio Fish, our work is rooted in something bigger than production. It’s about nourishing communities, creating opportunity, and building systems that last. And just like in our work, the journey is not always easy - but it is always worth it.

As we reflect today, we are reminded that hope is built over time, through consistency, care, and belief in a better future.

Wishing you a peaceful and reflective Good Friday.

In this photo are Angela Atieno, CEO of Rio Fish, and Joan Achieng Otieno, founder of Kaunde Designs.

Two women.

Two completely different sectors - aquaculture and textiles.

Yet one surprisingly shared experience.
During the event, they had the opportunity to connect and exchange insights about navigating entrepreneurship as women. What quickly became clear was how similar the journey can be - building businesses, overcoming structural barriers, creating opportunities, and pushing forward in industries that are constantly evolving.

Platforms like those created by UN Women are powerful because they bring together women from different sectors who may never otherwise cross paths. These forums create space for dialogue, mentorship, and the sharing of experiences that strengthen the broader ecosystem of women in business.

When women connect, they do more than network - they empower each other to lead, innovate, and create lasting impact.

This weekend, we harvested from our dedicated project cage in partnership with WA-WA Kenya - and the moment carried meaning far beyond production numbers.
WA-WA Kenya works to empower women and girls in fishing communities around Lake Victoria, tackling harmful practices by creating dignified economic alternatives. Their decision to collaborate with Rio Fish and utilize our farming infrastructure is a testament to what aligned missions can achieve.
Through this partnership:
• Women in the community gain structured access to aquaculture production
• Skills and income opportunities are strengthened
• A sustainable model replaces exploitative systems
• Harvest becomes ownership, not dependency
By opening our facility and technical systems to this initiative, we are not just farming fish - we are supporting transformation within the value chain.
Real change happens when production, purpose, and partnership intersect.
We are honored to work alongside WA-WA Kenya and the women driving this work on the ground in Homa Bay.

Last week, we took time as a team to step away from our day-to-day roles and come together for a team-building session. It was a reminder that beyond depots, farms, freezer trucks, and data, Rio Fish is ultimately about people working in sync.

Every role matters - from sourcing and farming, to handling, processing, sales, and technology. When one part of the system weakens, the entire value chain feels it. When we work together with intention, trust, and shared purpose, the impact multiplies - not just within Rio Fish, but across the wider fisheries ecosystem we are part of.

Team building is not just about bonding; it is about understanding how our individual efforts connect to food security, livelihoods, and sustainable use of our lakes. We move faster and further when we move together.

Grateful for the team that shows up every day to make this system work.

Team building at Rio Fish isn’t just a break from work it’s a reset. 🌊🐟

It is a moment to pause and take stock of where we are, where we’re going, and how we can get there together. A space to update the team on our journey, listen openly to ideas and challenges, and have honest conversations about what’s working - and what we can do better.

Most importantly, it’s a chance to level the ground. Titles aside. Hierarchies paused. Just people, purpose, and shared ambition.

We also laugh, unwind, learn from one another, and reconnect as humans - not just colleagues. Because strong teams are built on trust, openness, and moments of joy as much as they are on strategy.

Grateful for this team. The work continues - stronger, clearer, and more united. 💙

At our Sirare Depot, partnerships and purpose come together. 💙🐟
Seeing Rio Fish alongside Farmer’s Choice reflects what strong collaboration can achieve - reliable food systems built to serve communities across Western Kenya and beyond.

This depot plays a key role in advancing food security and nutrition, providing access to high-protein tilapia that supports healthier households and local livelihoods. It’s all part of our commitment to resilient, inclusive value chains aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Decent Work & Economic Growth (SDG 8).

Sustainability is built into how we operate. Our solar-powered freezers run at sub-freezing temperatures, ensuring fish stays fresh while reducing environmental impact - proof that climate-smart solutions can strengthen local food systems.

Fresh fish. Strong partnerships. Sustainable impact.

Today, we shine a light on our Migori depot - and on Alice, one of our trusted team members who has been with Rio Fish for over five years. 🐟💙
Alice plays a key role in ensuring Migori has a consistent, sustainable supply of fresh fish. From maintaining top cold-storage standards to carefully serving customers exactly what they need, her diligence never wavers. In the photo, she is serving one of the women from the community - a moment that reflects something deeply important to us.
Women are the cornerstone of families. Alice works hard to support her own household while also ensuring another household has access to clean, reliable, and nutritious fish. This is what impact looks like: dignity in work, trust in service, and nourishment reaching the heart of our communities.

Last week at our farm, Metrine our Farm Manager shared an exciting update - the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute team was on site conducting joint research with Rio Fish. 🐟🔬

The team sampled our cages as part of an ongoing study aimed at strengthening data, best practices, and long-term sustainability in aquaculture. Partnerships like this matter. Research is the backbone of a resilient aquaculture sector - helping farmers improve growth cycles, feed efficiency, fish health, and environmental outcomes.

At Rio Fish, we are always eager to collaborate, learn, and contribute to evidence-based solutions that move the entire sector forward. When knowledge is shared, everyone benefits - from farmers to consumers, and our lakes too.

💬 We are curious: what’s one thing you have always wanted to know about the life cycle of a tilapia?

Last week, our team visited Koginga BMU Fish Market in Homa Bay, one of the county’s newest modern fish markets, equipped with proper refrigeration, cleaning stations, and improved hygiene infrastructure. As we prepare to launch our Rio Fish station at the site, we were encouraged by the progress - but also reminded of a challenge close to our hearts.

We met a hardworking fish trader earning an honest living. However, we noticed many of the fish being harvested and cleaned were far below sustainable size, with some processing happening outside designated cleaning areas. Harvesting juvenile fish threatens future stocks and disrupts the lake’s delicate ecosystem. These species are meant to be harvested at larger sizes - for the health of the lake, the livelihoods it supports, and future generations.

At Rio Fish, sustainability means protecting both people and ecosystems. Help us raise awareness: when we fish out the infants, we erase tomorrow’s harvest.

♻️ Join the conversation. Repost and help protect our lakes.
