Ever wondered how those little silks on an ear of corn turn into kernels?

🌽 At the very top of the corn plant is the tassel. The tassel produces and releases pollen.

💨 That pollen is carried mainly by the wind and lands on the silks growing from the developing ear of corn.

Here’s the really neat part:

👉 Every single silk is connected to ONE potential kernel of corn.

When a grain of pollen lands on a silk, it grows a tiny pollen tube all the way down the silk to fertilize the ovule that becomes that kernel.

If a silk isn’t successfully pollinated, that kernel may never fully develop — which is why sometimes you peel back the husk and find a few missing kernels.

A full ear of corn can have hundreds of silks — one for every kernel! 🌽

🌾 FAST FARM FACT! 🌾

Think goldenrod is causing your seasonal allergies? Think again!

The real culprit is often RAGWEED! 🤧

🌿 Ragweed produces huge amounts of lightweight pollen that travels through the air — triggering sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses and other late-summer allergy symptoms.

🌼 Goldenrod gets blamed because it blooms around the same time, but its pollen is heavier and sticky, designed to be carried by insects rather than blown through the air.

🐝 Goldenrod is actually an important late-season food source for bees and other pollinators!

So don’t blame the goldenrod — blame the ragweed! 🌿🤧

🚨 MISSISSAUGA FARMERS’ MARKET UPDATE 🚨

Unfortunately, our farmers market trailer has broken down, and despite our best efforts, we won’t be able to make it to the Mississauga Farmers’ Market tomorrow (Sunday).

We’re incredibly disappointed to miss the market and apologize to everyone who was planning to stop by and see us.

We’re working on getting the trailer repaired and hope to be back up and running as quickly as possible! 🛠️🚚

Don’t overlook those soft, extra-ripe peaches. They may not look picture-perfect, but they’re often the sweetest, juiciest and most flavourful of the bunch!

A few bruises or soft spots don’t automatically mean a peach is bad — just cut away any damaged areas and enjoy the good stuff.
