2 Billion Trees Project
From Pinecones to Future Forests

Yesterday, we headed out into the forest to check in with some of our pinecone harvesters — Eric, Solomon, Sandy and Darren — who are hard at work collecting black spruce and jack pine cones for our 2 Billion Trees tree planting program.

But these aren't just pinecones. They're the beginning of a new forest.

Once harvested, the cones will be sent away for processing, where specialized heat extraction is used to open the cones and carefully collect the seeds inside. Those seeds will then be used to grow young black spruce and jack pine saplings.

Next year, those saplings will make their way back to us to be planted on the land they came from.

Our focus is on areas that were previously planted and later burned by wildfire — sites where there is little to no hope of sufficient natural regeneration on its own. By planting these saplings, we're helping give those forests a chance to grow again.

And we're growing this work in a BIG way.

This year, we planted 75,000 tree saplings.
Next year, we're aiming for 500,000 trees.

It all starts right here:

Harvest the cones
→ Extract the seeds
→ Grow the saplings
→ Bring them home
→ Plant them back on the land

What Eric, Solomon, Sandy and Darren are harvesting today will eventually become part of the forests growing here for generations to come.

For us, that's what working with the boreal forest is about. It's not only about what the land can provide for us — it's also about what we can give back.

A huge thank you to Eric, Solomon, Sandy and Darren for the work they're putting in out on the land. What might look like a handful of pinecones today represents something much bigger.

75,000 trees planted this year.
500,000 is the goal for next year.
And it starts with a pinecone. 🌱
