What the heck is a haskap?
These dark blue oblong berries, also known as honey berries, or Lonicera caerulea, if you like scientific names, do grow naturally in northern areas of Siberia and Japan. The first cultivation of them in Canada was in the 1950s in British Columbia. Since then, Dr Bob Bors and his team at the University of Saskatchewan have bred many varieties of haskaps for planting. The varieties developed have a wide range of sweetness and tartness allowing for wonderful flavour and lots of healthy benefits. To help facilitate proper pollination, HoneyBerry Farms has multiple varieties planted throughout our 3 fields.
Haskaps can be used in so many ways in the kitchen. Please stay tuned for ideas and recipes in the coming weeks.
