We’ve been open for nearly two months, and it’s time to share the story of our namesake, Mr. Raymond Bernard Ryan. Raymond is a cherished family member and an inspiration to us all.

Growing up in rural Nova Scotia, Raymond faced challenges during his teenage years. Nevertheless, he worked tirelessly to overcome so many barriers. He began his career as a waiter at the Sheraton Halifax and, on his own, finished his education. Raymond earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University before relocating to Toronto. There, he completed his master’s degree at the University of Toronto, eventually becoming a multi-faith chaplain at Westpark Healthcare Centre.

Raymond’s final move was to Edmonton, where he pursued an after-degree in social work and worked as an inner-city social worker at Boyle Street Community Services.

Throughout his life, Raymond dedicated himself to caring for those around him, including his family, patients and clients. While he never butchered an animal, he relished eating and drinking, cherishing special moments with everyone he met.

Tragically, in 2018, Raymond lost a courageous battle to lymphoma, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he cared for.

To this day, Raymond Ryan continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for those seeking a positive change in their lives when faced with darkness.

There’s something special about looking back at the early days—long before the doors opened, when it was all just a vision taking shape. Weekends learning the craft, refining cuts, asking questions, making mistakes and getting a little better with each step. It wasn’t polished, but it was honest—and it’s a reminder that every great counter starts with a willingness to learn, to put in the work and to believe in what you’re building.
