Your beans and cucumbers aren't slowing down because the plant is tired. They slow down because you stopped picking.

One ripe pod left on the vine tells the whole plant the season is over. A vegetable plant has one goal — make mature seed. The moment a fruit ripens fully, she shifts energy out of new flowers.

- Bush beans — pick every two to three days while pods are slender and smooth. Two missed days in hot weather stalls a productive plant.

- Cucumbers — one yellowing fruit missed under a leaf shuts down flower production on the entire vine. Pick daily at the dark-green stage.

- Zucchini — cut at six to eight inches. A single oversized fruit redirects all the plant's energy into that one squash and production stops.

- Peas — one over-mature pod with hardening seeds signals the vine to stop flowering. Daily picking extends the harvest by weeks.

- Okra — two to three inches, every day. Pods go from tender to woody in 48 hours in summer heat.

Harvest young and often. The plant keeps trying as long as no seed matures.
