Definitely be sure to check out the ice caves, but please be safe doing so! Thanks for the helpful reminder Tom Lewis, Councillor - Ward 5 Town of Fort Erie!!
(Market cider pairs well with outdoor exploration too, just an fyi 😉)
The ice caves and formations along Lake Erie are truly stunning to see this time of year and have drawn a lot of attention from residents and visitors alike. While they are beautiful, they can also present serious dangers for anyone exploring near or on the ice.
Conditions along the shoreline can change quickly. Ice can be unstable, caves can collapse without warning, and rising winds or shifting water levels can create hazardous situations in a matter of minutes.
Please use caution, keep a safe distance, and avoid venturing onto the ice unless you are properly equipped and confident in the conditions. As shown in the image below, what looks solid and inviting can be far more dangerous than it appears. Rescues on the lake also put our first responders in danger.
Stay safe, look out for one another, and enjoy our winter waterfront responsible.
