It's been a gorgeous Halloween weekend at the farm. I am ending it with a classic dry martini. As you can see I substituted a naturally fermented Jerusalem artichoke for the olive.

Pumpkins anyone? I have never grown this variety before, so I can't say how they taste. They look like standard pumpkins, with irregular shapes. Great for jack-o-lanterns. Free for pickup.

In my garden dill is a w**d. I have never planted nor ever will plant a dillseed.
But I do cultivate it and harvest it. And I think of my Ukrainian grandmother who probably planted it. She certainly made use of it, in borscht as well just about everything else.
If you have it in your garden, it should be ready now. The window is narrow, because it changes dramatically once it goes to seed.
I both dry and freeze it.

I pulled up some jerusalem artichokes (or sunchokes) a few days ago, which had overwintered. About half had started to deteriorate, but there were plenty of good ones.
I ate a few lightly chopped and fried, delicious with a scrambled turkey egg. And the rest are fermenting for a week in this 4 litre jar. This seems to take out the gases that make some people unable to eat them, ie fartichokes.

My seed order from West Coast Seeds arrived yesterday. A larger order from Vesey's is coming by March 15 (and that was made at least 2 weeks earlier than the West Coast order).
I also have a lot of seeds from last year, most of which will be viable. Including saved seeds.
I have started several herbs, a few Brussels sprouts. And one squash (Galeux d'Eysines).

Watermelon radishes did very well after a late July planting. They are not really watermelon colour, but you get the idea. They are big with a mild to moderate bite, and no bugs despite being planted in the dirt without row covers or pesticide of any kind.
