The concept of “zero-waste living” has been popping up in large Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Halifax… but is Sudbury ready? The answer is YES! Introducing, The Nickel Refillery. We’re a zero-waste lifestyle and bulk goods shop, operating as a social enterprise. Our location at 227 Regent Street in Sudbury functions as an interactive, supportive, and educational environment.
· bulk products on tap
· personal care and hygiene items
· home cleaning supplies
· ingredients for DIY projects
· sustainable kitchen goods
· products made by local artisans
Some of the products are offered as refills, or “on tap”, such as laundry and dish soap, shampoo, etc. Here’s how the refilling process works:
Step 1: Bring in any clean container or a lightweight bag to fill.
Step 2: weight containers and write the tare weight down (we’ll have grease pencils handy!)
Step 3: fill, fill, fill!
Step 4: We deduct the tare weight upon paying, so you only pay for what’s inside.
Forgot your container? Don’t own one? No problem! Borrow one of ours for a small refundable deposit, take one from our donation bin (they will be washed and ready to use), or buy one to own and cherish.
Community involvement
The Nickel Refillery also serves as a community space where people can gather and relax over coffee, share ideas, tips, and work together to reduce waste in their everyday lives. We are offering a workshop space to host events such as…
· product making classes
· clothing and toy swaps
· repair workshops
· upcycle workshops
· recycling classes
· DIY workshops
To take it a step further, our social enterprise model will deliver a percentage of all profits back to the community, to support and endorse a variety of community-led waste reduction initiatives.
