ONE DOZEN TASTY FACTS ABOUT THE ALMIGHTY EGG! 🥚🐣🍳🐤

1. Egg yolks are one of few foods which naturally contain Vitamin D, also known as the "Sunshine Vitamin." Vit D is crucial for the absorption of calcium!
2. Shell colour is determined by the breed of the hen and has no bearing on nutrition or flavour.
3. Eggs are a source of "complete protein", meaning they have all nine amino acids, aka the "building blocks of life."
4. Eggs that have not been washed maintain a protective coating called the "bloom" or "cuticle" which prevents bacteria from entering the thousands of pores in the shell, and therefore it's not necessary to refrigerate them.
5. It is estimated that, globally, approximately 3 million eggs are eaten per minute!
6. Eggs contain mono and polyunsaturated fats, known as healthy fats, and are considered a good option for heart healthy diets.
7. The largest eggs are laid by ostriches and can weigh as much as 1.5kgs, equal to about two dozen chicken eggs!
8. Free range eggs are not just more ethical, they also tend to contain more Omega 3 fatty acids due to the foraged nature of the hens' diet.
9. Chickens have been domesticated for at least 10,000 years, likely for access to their eggs. They were so important that one ancient Egyptian tomb bears a mural showing a man carrying a bowl of large eggs.
10. The people of the Netherlands hold the record for highest egg consumption at about 33kgs per year.
11. The egg carton was invented in 1911 in Smithers, British Columbia by Joseph Coyle, apparently as a way to solve a dispute with a farmer over the sale of broken eggs.
12. The Guinness world record for most eggs eaten at once is held by Joshua Cottreau of Australia, at a whopping 143 eggs in less than four minutes!
Bonus fact: We have four different vendors at the Market who sell eggs! Come grab yours tomorrow, 8-1!

What's your favourite way to eat an egg?

There's a lot of food prep happening these days, but here is a little trick to save a couple bucks and get a bit more out of your purchases: veggie scrap veggie broth! When you peel your onions and garlic, scrape your carrots, herb ends, wilted greens, broccoli and cauliflower stems, celery, fennel, all those things you forgot in the crisper, all those bits you'd compost anyway? Pop them in a freezer bag. When it's full, cover it with water in a large pot and run it to a boil, then simmer it. You can add other items like a full chopped onion, dried mushrooms, etc, but you get the gist. Simmer it for about forty minutes; you can taste it while it goes. Strain it and save it in the fridge until you need it!

Veggie broth can be used literally anywhere water or stock and broth are called for in a recipe!

Are you always knitting more hats than you can ever wear, or do you have a million houseplants propagating on your windowsills? Do you grow mushrooms, make cheese, brew beer, write novels, create beautiful ceramics or make a mean Biryani? We'd love to hear from you, whatever you want to share! We have tables available for the Saturday Farmer's Markets between now and Christmas (and beyond!) so contact us via DMs here on Instagram or at [email protected].

Did you know that the good folks can also sharpen your serrated blades? No more jagged bread slices or arm work-outs while trying to enjoy a steak for you! Stop by their booth every Saturday to drop your knives off to be sharpened while you shop, and for any blade related questions you might have.

Hey Market Friends, we will be closed on November 8th due to Christmas at the Forum. Many of our vendors have booths at other markets, and some of our others will be making arrangements to try to be available to you. Make sure to chat with your favourite Market folks to see how you can still support them on November 8th!
