Have you been wondering what a CSA is? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It’s like a subscription box for fresh, local produce. We host two CSAs at The Grainery, .family.farm and .farm . This means that our store operates as a pick-up spot in the city for members of the CSA to get their weekly produce box.
The Hutton Family Farm CSA operates at The Grainery year round! The pick-ups happen on Wednesdays from 2:30-6:30pm (Our store is open to the public on Wednesdays too, and everyone can come shop during this time!) The Hutton Family Farm is located in Lakeville, NS. They grow tree fruits like apples, pears, cherries and plums, as well as numerous vegetables both on land and in greenhouses. Hutton can also be found at The Brewery Market. Check out their instagram to learn more about what an amazing impact local farms have in our province!
Spring Tide Farm is certified organic and 100% female owned and operated! Their CSA runs from June to October, so The Grainery opens an extra shift during these summer months to host the pick-up (5:30-7:30pm on Tuesdays). Spring Tide grows mixed vegetables, cut flowers, and even raises honey bees! Read more on their website or instagram about how they use social, cultural, economic and environmental knowledge to promote food sovereignty, justice, sustainability, and healthy agricultural ecosystems.
Participating in CSA programs or buying directly from farmers markets cuts out the intermediaries, so the money you spend goes straight back into the farm! This year, the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture is offering an incentive of 10% off participating CSAs which can be found in their CSA Directory (linked in bio). We love CSAs and encourage everyone to learn more about them!
