Who we is....

Meet Byron and Bobbie Mellum. Their story began in the Saskatchewan prairies, in a small farming community, where many generations follow in the footsteps of their farming ancestors. It is these deep roots that eventually brought them full circle to their “little patch of heaven” in beautiful British Columbia.

After high school, Byron left his family farm to study psychology through the University of Calgary. Bobbie pursued Elementary Education at the University of Alberta. After finishing school, they moved to BC to chase their Okanagan dream. They found themselves in the picturesque hamlet town of Oyama. Byron and his brother planted the orchard in 2005 and built the fruit stand in 2008. Byron worked as a child and family counsellor, while farming part-time for 15 years. Bobbie postponed her teaching career, so the three kids could spend their early years on the farm, surrounded by the natural world.

Byron loved his job helping youth, but his farming roots pulled heavy at his heart. In 2016, he made the tough decision to leave his career and follow his aspiration of farming full time. Together they wanted to create a place where ALL kids could be farm kids. They wanted to encourage youth to understand where their food comes from and to experience the FUN of being on a farm. The Prairie Folk Farmery was born!
