Millbrook Mercantile May Cheese of the Month Club.

Spring has finally arrived and the patio at the store is up for your dining pleasure. In addition to our award winning sandwiches we have added some additional food options for you to enjoy including a sandwich special, a summer salad, charcuterie to share, and some delicious homemade goodies.

Now back to the good stuff CHEESE. This month we have two multi award winning European classics that are sure to please. The first cheese is Midnight Moon, a goat’s milk Dutch Gouda from the Netherlands, with a sublime flavour and wonderful texture.

The second cheese is the quintessential French Brie cheese called Brie De Meaux, and double cream cow’s milk cheese from the town of Meaux in the Brie region.

In addition to the staff’s cheese selections for this month, your cheese box will include dried apricots, local organic honey, sweet potato crackers and pistachios.

Every month we bring in new and exciting white & red wines that we feel would pair wonderfully with the cheeses our staff have selected.

As always, with your COTMC membership you will receive the monthly cheese notes, food & wine pairing recommendations, recipe suggestions, invitations to private in-store functions, and other cool cheese & food related links and reviews.

Millbrook Mercantile Cheese Selection Update

Happy Friday everyone.

Every month we scour the world in search of the finest cheeses for our amazing customers to experience and enjoy. Since day one of operations we discovered one of the most distinguished Gouda producers from Holland called Basiron. Located in the Bodegraven region of the Netherlands, this is flavoured Gouda of the highest quality.

We are proud to carry the following flavours (all are made from pasteurized cow's milk unless otherwise noted, subject to availability):

Millbrook Mercantile April Cheese of the Month Club

With winter refusing to ever end our thoughts turn to warm, sunny places we wish we could be in. With that in mind, April’s cheese selections are a homage to the ancient world of Greece, and their wondrous culinary offerings that are sure to please.

Both cheeses are a blend of sheep, goat & cow’s milk so these cheeses are easier to digest for those that have lactose or other digestive sensitivities. The first is Bernadette’s legendary marinated Macedonian Feta cheese with candied citrus peel, oregano, chili flakes and EVO.

The second cheese is called Kafelograviera, and is often regarded as one of the 5 finest cheeses in the world by professional turofiles. This is the cheese used in Greek restaurants for the flaming cheese dish called Saganaki. We are going to provide a link for a video on how to safely make Saganki at home.

In addition to the staff’s cheese selections for this month, your cheese box will include a Dolmades (classic Greek appetizer of grape leaves stuffed with rice & onion), and Kalamata Olives from Corfu. We are including a shot of brandy so you can make your own Saganaki at home.

Every month we bring in new and exciting white & red wines that we feel would pair wonderfully with the cheeses our staff have selected. With this philosophy in mind, we have selected two unique wines that pair wonderfully with this month’s cheese selections

The white is a summer favorite called Albariño, not well known in North America, but beloved in Europe for its light, refreshing drinkability. From winemaker Marieta, from the Galacia region of Spain, this bright, fun wine has high-toned floral notes and well-defined apple, pear, apricot, peach, melon, and orange citrus. A wine built for seafood or vegetarian sushi. Score – 95

The red selection is big bold blended French GSM (Syrah 85% Grenache 12%, Mourvèdre 3%) from winemaker Chateau Paul Mas Clos Des Mûres of the Languedoc region. Raspberry tart and baked black plum mix with rhubarb and dried red currant on the nose. Generous fruit and lead shavings of number 2 pencil lead on the palate. Score - 94

Millbrook Mercantile March Cheese of the Month Club

This month's selections are all about flavour. With that in mind we have two incredible Dutch Goudas for all to enjoy. Both are from cheesemaker Basiron of The Netherlands who have been making flavoured Goudas for the past 80 years.

The first selection is their Basil & Garlic Pesto, and the second is a Black Lemon/Lime. The black colour is created by vegetable ash, and has a vibrant citrus pop, and the pesto has a warm earthy herbaceous finish.

In addition to the staff’s cheese selections, your cheese box will include our homemade spicy roasted red pepper & Feta cheese dip, balsamic marinated Cippolini onions, garlic stuffed Greek olives, and assorted crackers.

Every month we bring in new and exciting white & red wines that we feel would pair wonderfully with the cheeses our staff have selected. With this philosophy in mind, we have selected two wines that compliment Gouda cheese perfectly.

The white is a French Gewurztraminer Reserve from winemaker Bestheim of the Alsace region. Lychee-and-rose-petal perfume mingles with cinnamon-dust spice and a touch of candied-ginger warmth, while juicy honeysuckle & melon nectar, and acacia provide for a refreshingly fruity yet dry finish. Perfectly poised. Score – 93

The red selection is big bold Syrah from winemaker Falerina Vineyards in the Elqui Valley of Chile. Aromas of peppercorns, grilled blueberries and grapefruit. Firm but fluffy tannins, with warm stones and round fruit flavors, great depths of coffee flavour richness. Full-bodied and refined. Score - 94

Millbrook Mercantile December Cheese of the Month Club - X-mas Charcuterie Platters, Fresh Seafood & Gift Baskets.

With Christmas right around the corner we wanted to offer something warm and comforting for you to enjoy. We just returned from another wonderful cheese journey to Quebec to pick up a batch of one of the finest prepared fondue cheese boxes we have ever tasted.

From our friends at La Station Fromagerie in Compton, Quebec we are pleased to offer cheese in its finest form. This sublime Fondue is super easy to enjoy, just grab a pot and heat on the stovetop until gooey and warm.

Included in this month’s Cheese of the Month Club box, staff have paired them with a mini French baguette, smoked Farmer's sausage, a local apple, and two After 8 chocolates.

Every month we bring in a new white & red wine that we feel would pair wonderfully with the cheeses our staff select. That being said, we just received two fantastic new award winning wines to pair with this month’s selections.

The white is a bright French Vouvray from producer Donatien Bahuaud. The Les Grands Mortiers 2024 Vouvray is an off-dry Chenin Blanc rich with aromas and flavours of ripe Bartlett pear, white elderflower, fresh pineapple, honey & citrus.

The red is an bold Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from winemaker Umani Ronchi of Tuscany. A vivid, bright and textured red, showing aromas of dark cherries, blueberries and mild spices. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins.

As always, with your membership you will receive the monthly cheese notes, food & wine pairing recommendations, recipe suggestions, invitations to private in-store functions (we just did an awesome How To Charcuterie workshop, which was huge success) and other cool cheese & food related links and reviews.
