Why are we starting a market?
There is a growing movement in North America to ‘know where your food comes from’. The trend to buy local, is not going away any time soon. Farmer’s Markets have been around for millennia and most of the world still buys their food from a marketplace. We, in the West, are starting to catch on to the fact that buying local means fresher, safer and higher quality. Not to mention reducing the carbon footprint! Food produces about 8 tons of carbon emissions per household, or about 17% of the total emissions per household. With food recalls in supermarkets and the diminishing quality of fruits and veggies being sold in chain stores, people are yearning for something better. Not many people have time to drive from farm to farm to pick up produce and although CSAs are great, you are limited to what the CSA offers that week. Farmer’s Markets open up a WORLD of tastes, smells and experiences that are more than just a weekly visit.
Montague is beautiful and not just because our town welcome signs say so. There is a quiet charm and definite appeal to a person driving through. However, much of the tourist activity happens in Charlottetown and Cavendish. It’s about time PEI visitors get to see more of our part of the Island. We are aiming to make our market one of the best on the Island! It is our hope that Ferry riders will want to make Montague a place to stop and enjoy a weekend before moving on to other parts of the Island. The Farmer’s Market is one aspect that we hope will entice people to check out our piece of this lovely island.
Our market is outdoor, with access to air conditioned bathrooms. Our vendors are local people who are eager to share their love of farming, food, baking, crafting and foraging with other locals and tourists alike. This is more than a market, it is a movement! Hope to see you there!
