modprairiegirl modern preserves

modprairiegirl modern preserves Modprairiegirl creates modern preserves using old-school methods with a twist -- all natural, local, small batch, and artisanal. Vegan/vegetarian friendly.

I make jam the way my grandmother used to — all natural, with no added pectin or thickeners, and very low sugar. Fruit and veggies are local, and only the best of the season. The better the produce, the better the preserve. The compotes are subtle, one should taste the fruit first, followed by a gentle note of flavour. Savouries are bright and layered. My kitchen is vegetarian, and the full line i

s vegan. The batches are small, done entirely by hand, to exacting standards. Each preserve can be used in a myriad of ways….on toast, sure, but also in recipes, desserts, as condiments and as food enhancers. (Each and every one is eaten with cheese and crackers here. Or if I’m lucky, brie and a lovely bread.) Happy to share recipes! Custom orders are available seasonally. I love to take a family recipe and re-create it, or to be inspired by something from memories of childhood. Proudly Canadian, I believe in the values of homesteading - local, seasonal and simply delicious food.

Day four...part one - meandering
The picture you have in your head of Tuscany? Yep, it's exactly like that. Vineyards and rolling fields, cypress lined lanes, villas atop every ridge, and medieval walled town centres scattered on the hilltops.

Beautiful sunrise and birdsong to accompany my morning tea in Certaldo. One of my fave pictures of our trip, our parking garage seemed from another era and yet was perfectly practical in all respects.
Staggia Senese: small town known for being on the historic border between the republics of Siena and Florence, featuring a castle from 990. Proximity to the road of the Via Francigena meant that pilgrims passed by here in the 13th century, and the town was an important intersection. The arched gate to the centre still stands.
Monteriggioni: a fully intact 13th century walled medieval town, also along the Via Francigena. The piazza showcases a Romanesque church, Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1213. Spectacular views. (Discovered that the town features in Assassin's Creed, a random gaming fact that P and V were unimpressed by.)
Colle di Val d'Elsa: makes 15% of the world's crystal. Didn't see any, alas, I was too distracted by the Middle Ages vibe. Every lane filled with history and beauty.

Day three...part two
Florence is magnificent - and the Duomo is the centre of it all, a marvel of engineering and architecture, breathtaking from all angles and in all light.
My "you're not 20 anymore" knees were not especially happy with the climb inside the dome, but the view from the top, bellissima!
The Arno river flooded in 1966, and all across the city there are markers for this flood as well as significant floods in the 1500s. These markers are tucked amongst the street signs and other markers on the outside of the buildings, and are easily missed. This one is inside the Opera del Duomo Museum, where much of the original artwork from the Duomo are displayed. It's about level with the top of my head. This museum is at least two blocks away from the river.
Somehow I managed to find a yarn store. Much to my chagrin and to P's relief, it was not open.
View from a rooftop cafe, above the Ospedale degli Innocenti. Peaceful.

Day three....part one
Sunrise over the medieval town centre.
Florence! V's first time seeing its Renaissance splendour. Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Della Repubblica's carousel, the Duomo complex, marker where Savonarola was executed (look it up, big moment in Florentine history...and everyone walks past it 😑), David outside the Palazzo Vecchio, corner of the Uffizi, my 💜 in beautiful light, rower on the Arno, Ponte Vecchio crossing, ironwork (so many neat details on walls if you pause to notice), morning cioccolata and dolcetti.

Day 2...
Certaldo piazza, rather large snail 🐌, art!, breakfast pane, and our parking garage. You enter through an unassuming metal rollup door, and suddenly you're in an action movie set, complete with vintage autos, and a five point turn to get out of your parking spot.
Tuscan countryside. Looks exactly like what you imagine when you hear "Tuscany." Breathtaking. Rolling hills, Italian villas, vineyards, the iconic tree. Every time we rounded another corner, we were treated to a spectacular vista.
My beloved 💜
Volterra, and its medieval walls. Roman theatre ruins.
Random giant circle ⭕️ thing I dashed across the strada to investigate. There was another one we happened upon but no clue of the why.
Poggibonsi, the town next to Certaldo. We stopped for a couple groceries. Rewarded with beauty.

To all the amazing complex wonderful strong brilliant women in my life. Thank you 💐 truly for inspiring me and raising me up every day.

We have much work to do, now more than ever. In big and small ways, we must keep speaking out, keep pushing back, and keep breaking boundaries set by society and men. We must do it for ourselves, for our sisters by blood and by choice, and most of all, for our daughters. 💜

And to the good men, both in my world and at large, please do not let silence make you complicit. Say something. Support the women around you with your privilege, and do not let misogyny go unnoticed.

I adore this illustration by - she captures the heart of many moments so beautifully.

36 years. It is heartbreaking to think about what these women might’ve become, what they might’ve accomplished. Murdered by an extremist, whose words to them were hateful and demeaning, whose goal was to kill “feminists.”

For myself, for my friends, for my mother, and especially for my daughter, I remember the and I remember the me who was also in university 36 years ago, outraged shocked horrified and determined to never forget.
