Day four...part one - meandering
The picture you have in your head of Tuscany? Yep, it's exactly like that. Vineyards and rolling fields, cypress lined lanes, villas atop every ridge, and medieval walled town centres scattered on the hilltops.
Beautiful sunrise and birdsong to accompany my morning tea in Certaldo. One of my fave pictures of our trip, our parking garage seemed from another era and yet was perfectly practical in all respects.
Staggia Senese: small town known for being on the historic border between the republics of Siena and Florence, featuring a castle from 990. Proximity to the road of the Via Francigena meant that pilgrims passed by here in the 13th century, and the town was an important intersection. The arched gate to the centre still stands.
Monteriggioni: a fully intact 13th century walled medieval town, also along the Via Francigena. The piazza showcases a Romanesque church, Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1213. Spectacular views. (Discovered that the town features in Assassin's Creed, a random gaming fact that P and V were unimpressed by.)
Colle di Val d'Elsa: makes 15% of the world's crystal. Didn't see any, alas, I was too distracted by the Middle Ages vibe. Every lane filled with history and beauty.
