Paradise Valley Produce

Paradise Valley Produce We are a small, certified organic mixed veggie farm located in beautiful Powell River, BC. Hello! We are Rachael and Dane Sherstad.

We are passionate about enjoying and taking good care of the natural world. Operating a small, organic farm is how we are turning this passion into a livelihood. Our aim is to grow top quality produce for our local community while being good stewards of the lan on which we rely. When we’re not working to grow delicious veggies we tend to be playing outdoors - trail running, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, climbing...

🐝 The Mason Bees are busy buzzing with activity. This has been the most successful Mason Bee cocoon building I have seen yet. The bees have shown they prefer the reeds over the wooden blocks and have filled almost all of the avaliable reeds for incubating larva. Watch them at work!

The Sumi Soaker, our new favourite farm addition. This watering system is a game changer for our irrigation operation and needs. We struggle with low water pressure and as a result overhead watering crops too often don’t get the water they need and we get poor germination. The Sumi Soaker works exceptionally with low water pressure and thus far has been addressing a long term dilemma for us.

Spring is a favourite time for a variety for reasons in Coastal BC and on the farm. We always look forward to the blooming of native plants we have been revegetating the property with. Satin Flower Native Nursery helped direct our efforts in the right direction 4 years ago and we have been adding plants each year. Supporting native plants helps support the animals we share the land with and pollinators and predatory insects we rely upon.

My favourite plants are:
1. Cascara Tree
2. Clustered Rose
3. Dogwood
4. Hardhack

🍠 We are cultivating sweet potatoes this season. Its always exciting learning about new crops and filled with yet to be learned challenges. Here we have been growing slips that we will plant outside later this month.

We practice Regenerative Farming β€” an agricultural practice focused on rebuilding soil, restoring and enhancing soil biodiversity and ecosystem health. This means our farm follows organic principles to grow produce in a manner that is healthy both for people, and the ecosystem. We are building healthy soil through extensive cover cropping. Utilizing crop rotation to minimize the impacts of insect damage and plant diseases. Rather than spraying toxins, we work to control w**ds through flushing w**d seeds, and tarping.
