A few reminders about the Saint John Food Purchasing Club
We wanted to take a moment to clarify a few things about how the Food Purchasing Club works.
First and foremost, this is a volunteer-run program. It is simply people helping people stretch their food dollars and have better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Each month, we take the money received from orders and purchase fresh produce in bulk. What is included can change from month to month depending on price, availability and case sizes. Cases are then divided as evenly as possible between the number of orders we have. Because we are packing a large number of orders with volunteers, individual items are not weighed out to an exact weight.
We absolutely try to purchase Canadian and local produce whenever it is available and affordable, and we do our best to avoid purchasing from the United States. However, the purpose of this program is affordability. There will be times when an item, such as lettuce or another fruit or vegetable, may come from the United States in order for us to continue providing a good variety of fresh food within the $25 order.
We also have several wonderful community partners who make the program more accessible by volunteering as payment and pick-up locations. Each partner is responsible for their own pick-up, so questions or concerns about a specific pick-up should be directed to that location first. Questions and constructive feedback are always welcome. What we do ask is that everyone remember there are real people behind this program who are volunteering their time. Harassment or disrespect toward any of our volunteers or partner locations will not be tolerated.
At the end of the day, this program really is just neighbours and community organizations working together to make fresh food a little more affordable. ❤️
