Have you ever heard of Anise hyssop? Also known as Agastache foeniculum, it is a perennial herb native to Ontario (which pollinators love) with a long history of use as a culinary herb.๐Ÿ’œ

A member of the mint family, it boasts a minty licorice taste with strongly licorice scented leaves which works well in baking, beverages, salads, finishing garnishes, and more, with edible leaves and flowers.๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿต

Historically Anise hyssop has long been used as a traditional medicine, especially amongst Indigenous populations. Its leaves can be used as a seasoning, dried for use in tea, used fresh in salads, or made into jellies. Its edible flowers make a nice addition crumbled into salads or added into baked goods, like cookies and shortbreads, cakes and muffins, herbal breads and scones, and more!

You can find Anise hyssop and other culinary herbs at the Horton Farmers' Market from vendors like Herb 4350 - Potager & Petal Gardens. If you have any questions about uses, flavours, or serving suggestions, don't hesitate to ask our farmers, they are a wealth of knowledge and love to share what they know!๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ

There are few treats in life as delicious, decadent, and Canadian as butter tarts, and Wacky Wendell's Butter Tarts have become an exclusive Horton Farmers' Market staple (before they sell out of course).๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜‹

Behind every tart - whether it's a classic plain, raisin, pecan, or a seasonal flavour - is a generational recipe, plenty of care, and family connection. Each batch starts with a hand-made pastry, a family recipe handed down from Wendell's mother, and maple syrup made by their family.๐Ÿ’•
