And then there were four. 🤍

I really hoped I wouldn’t have to write that sentence again.

After losing one of Mohawk’s six babies earlier this week, we lost a second little one. 💔

But farm life has this way of making you hold two things at once — the heartbreak of the ones you couldn’t save, and the absolute joy of the ones thriving right in front of you.

And LOOK at these four. 🥹🐥

They are busy. Curious. Eating. Exploring. Climbing over each other. Disappearing under Mohawk and popping back out like tiny fuzzy whack-a-moles.

And Mohawk?

She is still completely committed to this motherhood gig. Watching them. Calling to them. Letting them crawl all over her. Then tucking everybody back underneath when it’s time to settle.

Six tiny babies started this story with her.

Today, we celebrate these four. 🤍

And judging by the amount of attitude already packed into approximately three ounces of fluff… I have a feeling they’re going to give us one hell of a story.

🐥 Tell me — which little one did your eye keep going back to in this video?

Follow along. We’re raising these babies right alongside Mama Mohawk, one tiny milestone at a time. 🤍

Nesting box drive-thru is BACKED UP. 🚗🐔🥚

Lower lanes: FULL.
Some are even double parked. 😂

Upper lanes: apparently do not exist.

This is the photo. But it’s not the whole story. 🤎

Social media gets the fluffy chicks.
The proud mama.
The cute little faces gathered around the feeder.

It doesn’t always get the part that happened a few hours before.

Today, we lost one of Mohawk’s babies.

This morning, one tiny chick wasn’t acting right. Smaller. Quieter. Wobbly. One little eye kept closing.

So I did what you do when something in your care needs you.

I checked. I warmed. I offered water and vitamins. I tried food. I watched. I worried. I hoped.

And despite everything I could do, that tiny baby didn’t make it.

That’s the part of raising animals that doesn’t fit quite as nicely on Instagram.

Sometimes you notice something is wrong and you save them.

Sometimes you lose sleep, get dirty, rearrange your entire day, learn everything you can, and somehow pull off the impossible.

And sometimes you do all of those things…

and you still lose one.

That’s farming too.

It’s not just fresh eggs, fluffy babies and pretty sunsets. It’s responsibility. It’s watching closely enough to notice when something changes. It’s having the grit to try when an animal needs you—and accepting that sometimes trying your absolute hardest still doesn’t change the ending.

Tonight, Mohawk has five tiny wild children tucked underneath her.

They’re feisty. They’re busy. They’re healthy. And I’m incredibly grateful for every single one of them.

But today there should have been six. 🤎

For everyone who raises animals: what’s something you wish people understood about the part they don’t see?

I said I wanted a hobby farm.
Apparently I meant an unpaid position in animal hospitality. 😂

The chickens have demands.
The rabbits are renovating without permits.
The ferrets choose crime.
The dogs contribute nothing financially.
And Kiwi just shows up like she has an all-inclusive package.

I don’t own a farm. I’m the staff. 🫠

What animal started YOUR collection? 👇

Every night, Kiwi clocks in to es**rt me to the coop and supervise chicken lockup.

Is hiring a cat as chicken security a questionable business decision? Probably. But she has perfect attendance and works for snacks. 🐈‍⬛🐔

We lost a chick today. I tried everything to save it. It was much smaller than the rest and just wasn’t responding to anything. Sometimes the rollercoaster of farming is just cruel.

SHE TOOK THE BABIES. 😭🐥

Six tiny Silkie chicks.
One extremely broody Mohawk.
And one questionable decision made by me on a Sunday night. 😂

We waited until dark, tucked six babies underneath her and hoped her little chicken brain would wake up Monday morning thinking:

“Well s**t. Apparently I hatched six.” 💀

And you guys…

SHE BOUGHT IT.

She tucked them all underneath her. She talks to them. She watches every tiny move. They crawl out from under her little by little, explore their new world and disappear right back underneath Mama when they need her. 🥹

And this morning came the moment I was waiting for.

Mohawk got up.

The babies followed.

And Mama took her SIX surprise children to breakfast. 😭❤️

She showed them the food while they pecked around beside her like they’ve belonged together all along.

Mohawk is absolutely crushing motherhood.

I, however, am not.

I’m currently the unpaid director of chick security, conducting roll call approximately every 14 seconds:

1…2…3…4…5…

WHERE THE HELL IS SIX?!

Oh. Under Mohawk.

Repeat indefinitely. 😂

So yeah.

Welcome to Mohawk’s Mom Era. 🐥❤️

Six babies. One tiny mama. And apparently an entire farm now revolving around them.

Who wants daily Mohawk + baby updates? Because I am already WAY too invested. 😂👇

Broody season is back. So is the attitude.I took the eggs… she took it personally. 🤦‍♀️🥚
