Hello seafood people!

Long time, no "sea" (lol)! I have been extremely busy kick starting my own fishing enterprise in the beautiful town of Twillingate. I'm happy to report my first year fishing on my own was a success!

I have some premium salt fish caught in the waters around Twillingate on my very own small-scale fishing vessel. I'm carting this fish into St. John's on Thursday, October 24 (this week). I'll be in town until Sunday/ Monday picking up supplies that I'll need for boat and gear work this winter. Private Message anytime to arrange a salt fish pick up, and I'd love to catch up on all things fishing!

PRICES:
Salt Cod Fillets: $8 per pound
Split Cod: $7 per pound.

Yours truly,

Roots and Wings Fish Co.

I wasn’t able to be at the protests last week but I’ll definitely be there to support Monday gander at 8 am. All harvesters are asking for is a BASIC right to sell their fish where they want “FREE ENTERPRISE”. it’s time for politicians to STOP protecting big companies (multi millionaires) money over the interests of rural Newfoundlanders!

The provincial government needs to step up to fight for and protect NL fisheries, which means not being corrupted by large companies and protecting laws which create monopolies and disempower harvesters i.e. Minimum processing requirements.

It strikes me that my experience living and fishing in Maine might help put this into perspective. Maine has app. 3X the population of Newfoundland. Yet Newfoundland brings in TWICE as much value in raw material for fishing. Despite Newfoundland having higher value, and less population, the provincial government continues to lag behind juxtaposing state governments in the U.S. Maine legislature and the Maine lobstermen's union together have gone to Federal Court to protect their fisheries. Maine gov. consistently talks about and defends the Maine fishery as a vital aspect of the culture and economic backbone of Maine. The Maine state government supports the fisheries. Newfoundland government needs to keep their heads up and realize if they don't start supporting the small-scale fisheries NOW by changing a few simple outdated laws, then Newfoundlanders will suffer. The Maine lobster fishery has been successful for hundreds of years. Mainers have stuck together to conserve their resources and fight any body that tries to take them away.

My question is: Why isn't the Newfoundland government doing it's job to defend the people of this province against the grasp of large controlling corporations like they should?

Roots & Wings Fish Co is planning to continue and expand in 2024! We had a successful but highly tumultuous year in 2023 (should we expect any less in 2024?? Probably not!). I truly understood the meaning of “adaptive livelihood” as I navigated personal, political and industry-specific challenges. Calling all businesses and individuals to place your order estimate for Fall 2024 so we can make sure to have salt cod especially for you!

What an incredible week Roots & Wings got to spend in St. John’s for World Fisheries Day! We learned about small scale fisheries challenges and successes from around the world, and helped support the launching of a new book focusing on small-scale fisheries happening here in Canada. I even got to read an excerpt from my recently published chapter which can be found at the link below. Some may not realize that this book is actually SUPER special because Canada has historically denied the existence of SSF in Canada as well as denying basic rights to small scale fishing people. Time to celebrate small scale fisheries and all they can be to support food justice and sustainability. Finally, I had the chance to show case my salt fish product which I caught while skippering a commercial inshore boat this summer and processed in Twillingate this Fall. We sold out of all our fish. Big thanks to the chef at the event who made our fish taste AMAZING in two kinds of fish cakes for everyone to try. All in all this week was so special and one I’ll never forget. I can’t thank Too Big To Ignore enough for their support and making all this possible! &wingsfishco http://toobigtoignore.net/thinking-big-about-small-scale-fisheries-in-canada/
