Lately the turkeys have taken to flying to the very top of the barn and roosting in the rafters. It’s both amazing to see such large birds flying that high, and terrifying to walk under when you still have work to do and it’s not hair washing day.

10 months ago she fell off a processing truck onto an icy road and my husband found her and brought her home.

It’s been hilarious watching her discover everything for the first time, but nothing is funnier than watching her have a crush on this guy, trying to flirt her way into some egg babies.

Really, I think he’s a little scared of her tbh.

Okay okay, so I’m being silly. But this mink actually did get into my barn, and I actually did catch him with my own hands and put him in the cat carrier.
He now lives in a land far, far, away… and far away from other homesteads too, because I wouldn’t do that to someone.
Unfortunately, he did get one of my juvenile chickens, but the roosters did their jobs and there were no other casualties. This is the first predator attack in three years and it happened because I got a bit loose with how I seal up the barn at night. We have now corrected that.

It all could have gone down so much worse, so I’m grateful that we were able to handle it very quickly.

friends, the Samson Brand billboard is up in the Starbucks drive-through, and my husband is running a contest.
I could say the usual “support local” but we all know I spend his extra money on the animals 😂.
So really, please support the animals 🙏🥰

Our new billboard is up in the Tillsonburg Starbucks drive-thru! To celebrate, we're doing a draw for a $25 Starbucks gift card.

To enter: order a coffee, snap a photo of the billboard from your car, and post it and tag us on Instagram () or Facebook (). Tag a friend in your post for 2 entries instead of 1.

Contest closes September 12. We'll DM the winner directly, so keep an eye on your notifications!

I don’t know what it is, but I feel like this is the cutest trio our barn has ever seen 🥹

Day 2 on earth ❤️
Both lambs are doing great, and Maisie is an amazing first time mama.
The ewes are generally anxious the first time around, but she’s got her lambs out in the field and everyone is calm and happy.
One of the lambs is already very adventurous. We will have to watch that one.

We welcomed twin summer lambs last night 💕
These two are a 3rd generation in the barn, born to Maisie, who is the daughter of Oona.

A few notables from last night:
1. Maisie is the first time Mom, but she gave off every classic cue that it was going to happen soon so I knew I needed to watch the cameras.
2. Her lambs were super tiny, and she needed very little assistance. I did have to break the amniotic sack on the second one, but it began moving and breathing right away.
3. Grandma Oona walked over and began washing the lambs with her daughter. I love being able to be so close knit with my sheep that I can witness the family ties that exist among them. Did you know that was a real thing? It’s amazing ❤️

The lambs are doing well this morning. Happy, well fed and already playful. Two little girls to strengthen Maisie‘s position in the flock, and pretty much solidify Oona’s position as matriarch.

The addition of 4 ewes to my small flock means I will have to assess my ram situation soon, but that will be next years problem. For now all the boys are safely tucked into their own pens and pasture.
