PREPARING FOR BIG WORK AHEAD — AM******ON LOADED!

JRV is lucky today: Julito’s granddaughter volunteered to help with inventory work.

We just finished counting merchandise for our August 31, 2026 year‑end, and she stepped in to assist with the summarization — a task normally handled by accounting staff.

A few days before starting Grade 9, she’s already doing real accounting work.

Great job, Nia!

BREAKFAST AT JRV – PART 3

Breakfast is a personal thing.

When I was still working full‑time, my mornings always began with a healthy routine I prepared myself — cooked Quaker oats, whole‑wheat bread, and mixed fruits, always with bananas. I’ve always believed that an empty stomach cannot generate excellent ideas.

Now that I’m tending JRV Filipino Market, breakfast has become more flexible. I simply eat whatever my wife has prepared — sometimes a full breakfast, sometimes just a light snack, depending on what my appetite calls for.

Lately, I’ve been having breakfast at JRV around 8:45 AM. It keeps me energized throughout the day, helps me skip lunch, and lets me enjoy an early dinner at home with my wife.

And here are some of my recent simple breakfasts at JRV — nothing fancy, just enough to fill the stomach and survive the day (see photos):

Imbutido with fried dilis

Corned beef with egg

Luncheon meat with egg

These meals may be simple, but they give me the strength to run the store, serve our customers, deal with suppliers and enjoy the rhythm of each day.

BREAKFAST AT JRV – PART 2
(Better than “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” — the movie!)

Recently, we started cooking breakfast right here at JRV Filipino Market — and look what I’m having today… yummy!
Imbotido, fried dilis, egg, and a small portion of rice.

We also have another breakfast combo:
Tocino, egg, and corned beef with rice — or any combination you prefer.

All for a very reasonable price of $11.99,
including a bottle of water (to prevent choking!).

And if you want freshly brewed Barako coffee,
just add $1.00 per cup to the basic price.

Start your morning the JRV way — delicious, affordable, and proudly Filipino.

AN EXCELLENT NEWS FOR JRV!

Sometime in 2024, I began applying for a licence that would allow our customers to eat inside JRV Filipino Market. Unfortunately, the process could not move forward because the City’s Property Division insisted that we submit full documentation for a zoning review — even though our store did not meet any of the criteria that normally require one.

Today, that long wait finally ended.

A representative from the Office of Councillor Lily Ching visited JRV yesterday to conduct an on site inspection and evaluation to determine whether a zoning review or additional licence was truly required for our small dine in area.

The verdict is in: No change in our current licence classification. No additional zoning review. No extra licence required. We are officially allowed to let our customers eat inside JRV.

This excellent ruling is thanks to Councillor Lily Ching, who sent Mr. Romell Dennis (Badge #6496) to our store to investigate and evaluate whether we meet the criteria for classification as an Eating or Drinking Establishment. After a factual and thorough assessment, Mr. Dennis ruled in our favor.

We can now allow up to six customers to dine in the designated area of JRV — fully compliant, fully approved, and without any additional licensing burden.

A big thank you to Councillor Ching and her office for helping us navigate the city’s bureaucracy and finally resolve this matter.

ANOTHER LONG WEEKEND IS COMING — THE LABOUR DAY HOLIDAY.

Canadian Labour Day aligns with Labour Day in the United States, which officially adopted the first Monday of September in 1894. Canada followed the same model, and for good reason: choosing a Monday guarantees a long weekend for everyone — residents, citizens, and newcomers alike — to rest, travel, and enjoy the final stretch of summer.

For 2026, Labour Day falls on September 7, the first Monday of September.

This year’s long weekend will be extra special for our family.
Our younger sibling, Rody, and his wife, Wil, will be visiting us — in Toronto and of course, the first stops will be Niagara Falls and the revolving restaurant at the CN Tower, two must‑see attractions for any Toronto visitor.

My wife, Minda, will be joining us throughout the weekend, making sure our guests feel welcomed and at home — something she has always done so naturally and graciously.

Our youngest sibling, Renante, and his wife, Dalisay, will also be available to give the best tours Toronto can offer — despite being busy managing their business, Dalisay Filipino Market Corp. Their hospitality and knowledge of the city always make family visits memorable.

And joining the fun, our second‑to‑the‑last sibling, Franco, and his wife, Madz, will share their time showing the best that Toronto has to offer. Franco and Renante came to Canada together with our mother back in 1993 when Minda and I sponsored them, when they were still single. Now, the three musketeers — Julito, Franco and Renante — are ready to let our younger brother explore what Ontario is all about, as the province’s motto proudly says: “Yours to Discover.”

A long weekend, a meaningful holiday, and precious time with family — a perfect combination.

WHATEVER GOES UP… EVENTUALLY COMES DOWN.

Yes, the remittance exchange rate eased a bit today — but it still remains among the highest in recent memory at JRV Filipino Market.

Today’s Rates:
• Western Union: ₱44.6208 per CAD
• Viamericas: ₱44.586 per CAD
• Famex: ₱44.45 per CAD

Even with the slight dip, these rates are still strong, and all three providers continue to deliver excellent service to our community.

If you’re sending money home, now is still a very good time to take advantage of these high rates — before they move again.

PEANUTS — ANYONE?

When JRV Filipino Market opened its doors on February 3, 2023, we had no idea that a handful of consigned peanuts would help shape our future. Small entrepreneurs approached us to display their products on a consignment basis, meaning JRV would pay them only when their goods were sold.

One of the earliest products offered was peanuts. At first glance, peanut production looks like a small, simple business. But once you dig deeper — sourcing, roasting, packaging, quality control, and delivery — you quickly realize it’s a much more complex and committed undertaking.

As JRV continues to grow, we also face the realities of doing business: rent was recently increased, inflation has pushed up our operating costs, yet our selling prices have not necessarily increased at the same pace. To maintain stability and offset these rising costs, we needed to explore additional revenue streams. After careful consideration, we decided to enter the peanut business ourselves — a natural extension of a product already trusted by our customers.

Today, JRV Filipino Market proudly presents peanuts in two varieties:

• “Full Dress” (with skin)
• “Naked” (without skin)

These products sit side by side on our shelves with peanuts from our three long‑time suppliers. There is no favoured marketing strategy — customers simply choose the best‑looking peanuts, just as they would in larger supermarkets. No JRV sticker, no special pricing — our peanuts are priced similarly to the others, maintaining fairness and consistency across the category.

Through all these changes, our commitment remains the same: to strengthen our product offerings while continuing to support the small entrepreneurs who have been with us since day one.
