As a new school year gets underway, we want to wish all the teachers, administrators, and students a wonderful year ahead!

At MD Gardens, we love our community, and we know that teachers and administrators play such a pivotal role in building a community and keeping it strong. To celebrate them and all they do, we’re giving away a FREE seasonal bouquet to a lucky teacher or administrator!

Gourmet Beans at MD Gardens 💛💚

These are not your usual yellow and green beans, but don’t let their appearance fool you! Our Dragon’s Tongue yellow beans and Rattlesnake green beans are heirloom, stringless varieties that are tender, flavourful, and absolutely worth seeking out.

These beans are so tender and juicy that they’re delicious uncooked, making them perfect for straight snacking. Of course, you can still cook them just like any other bean, but know that their beautiful markings will fade with cooking, although the flavour certainly won’t.

If you’ve never tried these varieties, be sure to come by to savour them while they last. Fresh beans this good should not be missed and you likely won't find these varieties in your local grocery store.

♥️ Highlighting Our Tomato Love: Meet Feuerwerk or Fireworks in Tomato Form! 🍅

One of our long-time heirloom favourites, Feuerwerk is a large red beefsteak tomato adorned with beautiful splashes of orange, white and golden speckles and stripes. Its intricate markings resemble exploding sparks or a burst of fireworks, giving each tomato its own unique pattern. Every one is slightly different such that no two tomatoes are exactly alike!

But beauty is only half the story. Feuerwerk delivers incredible, full-bodied heirloom tomato flavour that we look forward to every summer. It’s sweet, fruity and beautifully balanced, with very little acidity. Delicious sliced onto a sandwich, it’s also perfect for salads and summer platters.

This is one tomato you simply won’t find in the grocery store. That’s part of what we love about growing heirlooms - the opportunity to discover unique, delicious varieties that you rarely get the chance to taste.

Best of all, Feuerwerk is just the beginning. We grow about 30 other heirloom and artisan tomato varieties, each with its own unique colour, shape, texture and flavour and they’re all available to purchase at our on-site farm store. And yes, we also grow several lower-acid varieties for those who typically steer clear of tomatoes because of their acidity.

🍅 Tomato season has arrived at MD Gardens!

This is what we’re known for, and this year, we’re growing over 30 different heirloom and artisan varieties. Each one brings something a little different to the table with its colour, shape and texture - but always, incredible flavour.

And if you don’t consider yourself a tomato fan, give these a try. A truly ripe, flavourful tomato enjoyed at its peak is a completely different experience from the standard grocery-store tomato. ♥️

When tomatoes are this good, you don’t need to do much with them. Sometimes the perfect meal is simply a toasted tomato sandwich with a perfectly ripe tomato, good bread, and a few flakes of sea salt.

Or turn them into salsa, bruschetta, pasta, Caprese or panzanella. There’s something pretty special about taking a handful of simple, fresh ingredients and ending up with something that tastes extraordinary.

Along with our mouth-watering tomatoes, we have plenty of other seasonal produce in the store, plus pasture-raised pork and lamb products from Lakeside Livestock.
