We had perfect weather today. Nice breeze, some sun, not too hot. Swipe to see beautiful beets, with greens, salad turnips, spinach, basil, dill. We harvested new herbs (for this year) like lemon balm, and lemon thyme. We have the best cilantro and dill. The peppermint and oregano are so fragrant. The harvest team got everything harvested, washed, packed, and loaded into the e-transit. Jen and Sarah took the load in to Warehouse Market and unloaded it into the cooler there. Warehouse market is open seven days a week at 2867 Isleville Street in North End Halifax. Weekdays: 9 to 6, and weekends: 9 to 4.

Beautiful weather!

Andrew L , Rachel, Roshni, Shaki, and the two Jens harvested all the greens, radishes, salad turnips, bok choi, tatsoi, and herbs.

Rachel, Jen B, and Sean washed and packed.

Andrew M, Liam, and Ben did field prep, mechanical weeding and mulching.

We had a safety meeting.

Lana and Jeff are working on finishing sales and display units for the new Market location.

The rest of the team is busy pruning, trellising, planting, irrigating, fencing, and smiling because the day was fine.

We’ve planted a lot of sorrel this spring. It is a wonderful, lemony perennial that combines well with bone broth. We chop it and put it in bowls before pouring the hot soup or broth on top for the lightest cooking. If it is cooked too much, you lose the lemon flavour.

Warehouse Market is open 7 days a week at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.
Weekdays: 9-6,
Weekends: 9-4.

Here we are in June, and the sun came out! So nice with a gentle breeze and birdsong after a cold and cloudy spell. Andrew L, Rachel, Shaki, Roshni, and the two Jens spent most of the day getting harvest done. This is week #2 of the farm share!

In other news, Jen B and Sarah were working in Nina, the greenhouse with rosemary and tomatoes. We brought in a hive of bees to help with pollination, and they are busy doing their job! Swipe for photos taken by Sarah and Jen.

Everything went in to Warehouse Market at the end of the day. The Market is open seven days a week! Weekdays: 9 to 6, and weekends: 9 to 4. The market is located at 2867 Isleville Street in North end Halifax.

Andrew L, Shaki, Roshni, Andee, and the two Jens harvested all the vegetables and herbs for Market.

In other farm news, we had our Health and Safety meeting. Harvested forage mulch. Chipped branches for mulch. (Have you noticed, we’re really into mulch?) Planted herbs and vegetables. Since it didn’t rain all day we focused on getting all the outdoor jobs done before the rain comes.

The fresh harvest went into Warehouse Market at the end of the day. The Market is open 7 days per week! Weekdays: 9-6, and Weekends: 9-4 at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

Thank you so much to all our farm share members! This is week # 1 of the 22 week farm share season. People are still signing up and sending in payments.

We are happy about this rain. The crops needed it! Andrew L , Rachel, Roshni, and the two Jens did a great big harvest today. Can I say epic? Our farm share has begun!! It is cause for so much excitement and celebration.

We still have some on offer if anyone is interested. Quite a few people usually wait until the very last minute.

The rest of the team continued with grass mulch harvesting, planting ginger, weeding, installing solar panels, cooking food for the week, and all the other rainy day jobs that need to be done on a farm.

The beautiful load of veggies and herbs went into Warehouse Market late Monday. They are available while supplies last at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax. The Market is open 7 days a week. Weekdays: 9-6, and Weekends: 9-4.

We are trying something new! These laying hens from our neighbours at Fill Yer Boots Farm, have been grazing a pasture on our farm for a few years. They are laying wonderful eggs, sold at Warehouse Market. They are also fertilizing the pasture. We are going to start harvesting early forage from the pasture for mulch in our greenhouses and fields.

This is a big deal!

We had to find a way to efficiently harvest this forage (grass and clover) and deliver it to the greenhouse in a dump trailer. We bought two old forage choppers so Sean could put together one working one that blows the forage into an adjacent dump trailer. David modified our dump trailer to receive the forage, bring it to the greenhouse, and dump it. From there, we had to wheelbarrow it into the greenhouse and mulch the tomatoes.

Are you still with me?

Then we had to figure out outdoor tomatoes. Ben and David prepared the land, added manure, and made hills. They modified the manure spreader to receive forage from the chopper, and then spread the mulch mechanically over the tomato hills . Our next job will be to plant the tomatoes in the hills, plant clover in the pathways, and add irrigation.

Our goal was to harvest young forage from an area that has been heavily fertilized by the laying hens, and add it to the soil. This fresh green mulch is a juicy fertilizer for the crop, but it is such an amazing thing to add for soil health. We have been seeing a tremendous response in earthworm activity, soil life in general, as well as improvement in soil organic matter.

We discovered 2 sets of twins today. Lana and Jeff, then Ben and David.

This was a big week, and we feel like we got a lot planted! We worked hard on getting irrigation working, forage chopped for mulching tomatoes, and a new area set up for perennial herb crops.

Next week is the first week of farm share!! It starts Monday May 25. You can pick up your share anytime during the week at the Warehouse Market, 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax. We haven’t moved the new location yet. We will keep you all posted on the move when we know more! Please make sure to sign up and send payment if you haven’t already.

We are just over the (sliver of a) moon because last weekend the field soil dried enough to plant hundreds of little leek seedlings today!!!

We also did a nice big harvest of all your favourite greens, salad turnips, and herbs. New herbs this week include peppermint and oregano!

The peppermint is strong and fragrant! Shaki walked into washpack as I was bagging it and said “Ooh! Smells minty!” 😊
