Proud to be on Treaty One Territory in the Exchange District Business Improvement Zone
Small Business Week β Spotlight: Ashdown Market π
This week, Treaty One Nations joins in celebrating Small Business Week, recognizing the First Nation entrepreneurs who are driving innovation, creating jobs, and strengthening our local economies.
Across Treaty One Territory, small businesses play a vital role in community growth by blending culture, creativity, and determination to build a more self-sustaining future for our people. Throughout the week, weβll be highlighting Treaty One member-owned businesses that continue to make an impact in Winnipeg and beyond.
One of those businesses is Ashdown Market, located in the heart of Winnipegβs historic Exchange District. This neighbourhood grocery has quickly become a cornerstone of community connection, helping to bring life back to downtown.
Co-founded by Josh Giesbrecht, an entrepreneur from Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation, Ashdown Market began as a small cannabis shop before evolving into a full-service grocery. Josh and his team recognized a clear need for a place where downtown residents could find fresh, accessible food close to home, and turned that vision into reality.
Today, Ashdown Market has grown into a true community space where food, culture, and creativity come together. Inside, customers can grab a bite at Ashdown Flame, a cozy restaurant serving hearty comfort food, or enjoy one of the live comedy shows hosted in the back of the store.
Stocked with everything from produce and pantry staples to locally made favourites like Bothwell Cheese and Prism Kombucha, Ashdown Market continues to grow as a symbol of innovation, community spirit, and Indigenous entrepreneurship in the heart of the city.
