Cultural Shock at Nursery Registration in the UK! 🇬🇧😲
So today, I went to register my 3-year-old daughter at a nursery here in the UK, and let me tell you—I was SHOCKED! Not in a bad way, but in a wow-is-this-how-things-are-done-here kind of way.
The level of safeguarding and policies in place blew my mind. Here are some of the things they asked me:
✅ What type of wipes should we use to clean her? Or do you have a specific preference? (Wait… what? Back home in Nigeria, the standard was “use whatever is available!”)
✅ Would you like us to brush her teeth? (Huh? Since when did nursery become a dental clinic?)
✅ Can we apply cream/lotion on her? Do you have a preferred brand? (Back home, you’re lucky if they even remember to wipe their noses properly!😂)
✅ She get food wey she no fit chop? (Okay, this one makes sense, but the level of detail was next level!)
E shock me say dem dey reason all these small small things. I totally understand that all these policies are in place to protect children, but coming from Nigeria, where what you bring is what your child will eat, brush teeth for school?…. Maybe am missing something…
It made me wonder—do we sometimes take certain things for granted back home? Or is this just a cultural difference?
For my fellow Nigerians (or Africans in general) living in the UK or other Western countries, did you experience this kind of cultural shock when dealing with nurseries and schools?
Let’s talk about it! Drop your thoughts in the comments!👇🏾🤣😂
