CHAPTER 25 – THE CHOICE

The cell door slammed shut behind her.
Again.
But this time—
Amara didn’t feel trapped.
She sat on the edge of the metal bed, the image still burning in her mind.
Her husband.
Alive.
Not dead.
Not buried.
Not gone.
Alive.
For years she had mourned him.
For years she had blamed fate.
For years she had carried pain that was built on a lie.
Her chest tightened.
Not from grief—
From rage.
“They stole years from me,” she whispered.
Across the cell, the woman on the bunk sat up.
“Who did?”
Amara looked up slowly.
Eyes cold.
“Everyone.”
The woman frowned.
“You okay?”
Amara let out a quiet breath.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I will be.”
CUT TO: ETHAN
Rain hit the windows of Ethan’s office.
Hard.
Violent.
Inside—
He stood over a table filled with files.
Photos.
Bank records.
Names.
His assistant entered quickly.
“We found him.”
Ethan looked up.
“Who?”
“The man visiting Amara.”
“Name?”
A pause.
“Daniel Voss.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s impossible.”
His assistant swallowed.
“It gets worse.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Say it.”
“He used to work for your father.”
Silence.
Heavy.
“My father is dead.”
The assistant hesitated.
“That’s what everyone believes.”
Ethan stared at him.
Then laughed once.
Short.
Dangerous.
“No.”
But even as he said it—
He remembered.
The missing reports.
The sealed records.
The secrets Elizabeth never explained.
His expression changed.
“Get me every file connected to my father.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And no one hears about this.”
The assistant nodded quickly.
Then left.
Ethan stood alone.
Staring at the rain.
“If my father is alive…”
He whispered the words like poison.
“Then this family is built on lies.”
BACK TO AMARA
Night fell.
Slow.
Silent.
Amara lay awake.
Eyes open.
Mind racing.
Then—
Footsteps.
She sat up.
The guard appeared.
“Lawson.”
Amara stood.
“You have one phone call.”
That surprised her.
She was led down the hallway.
Into a small room.
Phone on the wall.
The guard stepped back.
“You have two minutes.”
The door closed.
Amara stared at the phone.
She knew exactly who she should call.
Ethan.
He could help.
He would answer.
But instead—
She dialed another number.
One she hadn’t called in years.
The line rang once.
Twice.
Then—
A voice answered.
“Hello?”
Amara’s eyes darkened.
“It’s me.”
Silence.
Then the voice on the other end whispered—
“Amara?”
Her breath steadied.
“I know he’s alive.”
The person on the line said nothing.
Amara tightened her grip on the phone.
“Tell me where my husband is.”
The voice trembled.
“You shouldn’t have called me.”
“I’m done being lied to.”
A pause.
Long.
Painful.
Then—
“He’s in Lagos.”
Amara froze.
“What?”
“Lagos,” the voice repeated.
“He’s alive, but they’re moving him soon.”
Amara’s pulse surged.
“Who is ‘they’?”
The answer came in a whisper.
“The Cole family.”
The line went dead.
Amara stood frozen.
The Cole family.
Ethan’s family.
Everything inside her shifted.
The grief.
The anger.
The trust.
Especially the trust.
Because if the Cole family took her husband…
Then Ethan—
“No…” she whispered.
But doubt had already entered.
And doubt was poison.
CUT TO: ETHAN
Ethan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“What?”
A familiar voice spoke from the other end.
“You need to make a choice.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Who is this?”
The voice ignored the question.
“You can save Amara…”
A pause.
“Or you can save your father.”
Ethan went still.
The voice lowered.
“But not both.”
The line disconnected.
Ethan stared at the phone.
And for the first time—
He didn’t know what to do.
Cliffhanger

CHAPTER 24 – THE GHOST

The photo didn’t move.
But to Amara—
It felt like it was breathing.
Her fingers hovered over it.
Not touching.
Not yet.
Because the moment she did—
It would become real.
“That’s not him…” she whispered.
But her voice betrayed her.
The man across the table said nothing.
He didn’t need to.
Because the truth was already cracking through her denial.
Amara finally picked up the photo.
Her hands trembled—
Just slightly.
Same eyes.
Same posture.
Same scar on his wrist.
The one she used to trace with her fingers.
Her breath caught.
“No…” she said again.
But this time—
It wasn’t rejection.
It was fear.
FLASHBACKS COLLIDE
The funeral.
Closed casket.
No body.
“Too damaged to view,” they told her.
The rushed burial.
The missing documents.
The silence.
Things she ignored.
Because grief was easier than questions.
BACK TO THE ROOM
“You see it now,” the man said quietly.
Amara’s eyes snapped to him.
“If he’s alive…”
Her voice hardened.
“Then where is he?”
The man leaned back.
Calm.
Measured.
“Somewhere he doesn’t want to be.”
That sent a chill through her.
“What does that mean?”
“It means,” he said slowly,
“He didn’t just disappear.”
A pause.
“He was taken.”
Silence dropped like a blade.
Amara stood up abruptly.
Chair scraping loudly.
“By who?”
The man’s gaze didn’t waver.
“The same people who put you here.”
Her heart pounded harder now.
“This is a setup.”
“Yes.”
“A trap.”
“Yes.”
“And I walked into it.”
The man tilted his head slightly.
“No.”
A pause.
“You were led into it.”
That was worse.
CUT TO: ELIZABETH
A dim office.
Lights low.
Elizabeth stood by the window.
Phone pressed to her ear.
“I don’t like this,” she said.
A voice on the other end responded—
Calm.
Unseen.
“You don’t need to like it.”
Her jaw tightened.
“She’s adapting too quickly.”
A pause.
“Then slow her down.”
Elizabeth’s eyes darkened.
“I already tried.”
The voice softened—
But only slightly.
“Then try harder.”
The line went dead.
Elizabeth lowered the phone slowly.
For the first time—
She didn’t look in control.
BACK TO AMARA
Amara sat down again.
Slower this time.
Her mind was no longer spinning.
It was sharpening.
“If this is true…”
She looked at the man.
“Then why tell me now?”
He studied her.
Carefully.
“Because you’re the only one who can reach him.”
A pause.
“And the only one they didn’t break.”
Amara let that sink in.
“They think I’m weak.”
“Yes.”
“They think I’m trapped.”
“Yes.”
A slow breath escaped her.
“Good.”
The man’s eyes flickered.
Because that wasn’t the reaction he expected.
Amara leaned forward.
Voice low.
“Then we use that.”
A shift.
Subtle.
But powerful.
“You want my help?” she asked.
“I need it.”
“Then start telling me everything.”
Silence.
Then—
He nodded.
But just before he could speak—
The door burst open.
“Time’s up!”
Guards stepped in quickly.
Too quickly.
Amara stood.
Eyes still locked on the man.
“We’re not done,” she said.
He gave a faint smile.
“No…”
A pause.

CHAPTER 23 – THE TRUTH INSIDE
The lights never fully went off.
They just dimmed—
Like the prison wanted you to forget what darkness really looked like.
Amara sat on the edge of the metal bed.
Still.
Silent.
But inside her mind—
Nothing was quiet.
Voices.
Memories.
Fragments of fear.
The warehouse.
The gun.
The betrayal.
Her fingers tightened slowly into a fist.
“Control it…” she whispered to herself.
Because losing control now—
Would cost her everything.
Across the cell, the other woman watched again.
More carefully this time.
“You’re not normal,” she said quietly.
Amara didn’t look up.
“I’m focused.”
A pause.
“Same thing,” the woman replied.
FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING
Slow.
Deliberate.
Not like a guard.
Amara lifted her head slightly.
Listened.
The door opened.
“Lawson.”
Two guards this time.
“That was fast,” the woman muttered under her breath.
Amara stood.
Calm.
Ready.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
No answer.
That confirmed it.
This wasn’t routine.
INTERROGATION ROOM – AGAIN
But this time—
Something was different.
The air felt heavier.
Colder.
Amara stepped in.
And stopped.
Because this time—
Ethan wasn’t there.
The traitor wasn’t there.
Instead—
A man sat in the chair.
Older.
Composed.
Dangerously calm.
“Sit down, Amara.”
Her name.
Spoken like he owned it.
Amara didn’t move immediately.
“Do I know you?” she asked.
The man smiled faintly.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know you.”
That was worse.
Amara sat slowly.
Eyes locked on him.
“Let’s not waste time,” she said.
“I agree,” he replied.
He placed a file on the table.
Pushed it toward her.
“Open it.”
Amara hesitated—
Then did.
And what she saw—
Made her breath stop.
Photos.
Old ones.
Her.
But younger.
With someone she hadn’t seen in years.
Her husband.
Alive.
Her fingers trembled slightly.
“That’s impossible…”
The man leaned forward.
“Is it?”
Amara’s voice dropped.
“He’s dead.”
The man tilted his head.
“That’s what you were told.”
Silence exploded in her head.
“No…” she whispered.
But the man continued.
“Your husband didn’t just die, Amara.”
A pause.
“He disappeared.”
Her heart slammed against her chest.
“That’s a lie.”
“Then why,” he said calmly,
“were all records of his death sealed?”
Amara froze.
Because deep down—
She remembered.
The missing reports.
The rushed burial.
The unanswered questions.
Things she buried with her grief.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
The man leaned back.
“Someone who’s been watching.”
A pause.
“And waiting.”
“For what?”
“For you to be ready.”
CUT TO: ETHAN
Ethan slammed a file onto his desk.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
His assistant nodded.
“The warrant was signed under a restricted authority.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Which means?”
A pause.
“Someone powerful is hiding something.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Then we expose them.”
BACK TO AMARA
Her breathing slowed.
But her mind—
Was racing.
“If what you’re saying is true…”
She leaned forward.
“Then prove it.”
The man smiled slightly.
“I already am.”
He slid another photo forward.
This time—
A recent one.
A man.
Walking.
Alive.
Amara’s vision blurred.
“No…”
Her voice cracked for the first time.
“That’s not possible…”
The man’s voice softened—
But only slightly.
“He’s alive, Amara.”
Silence.
Dead silence.
“And they’ve been hiding him…”
A pause.

CHAPTER 22 – THE DEAL
The cell felt smaller now.
Not because the walls moved—
But because the truth was closing in.
Amara sat still.
Quiet.
Focused.
A bigger enemy.
Those words echoed in her mind.
This wasn’t just Elizabeth anymore.
This was something deeper.
Darker.
“Lawson.”
The guard’s voice snapped her back.
“You’re up.”
Amara stood slowly.
“Another visitor?” she asked.
The guard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Something was different.
INTERROGATION ROOM
This time—
No glass.
No phone.
Just a table.
Two chairs.
And tension thick enough to choke on.
Amara stepped in.
Paused.
Ethan was already there.
His eyes locked onto hers instantly.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.
Amara sat down calmly.
“And yet… here I am.”
A beat passed.
Heavy.
Ethan leaned forward.
“I’m getting you out.”
Amara shook her head.
“No.”
That hit harder than a slap.
Ethan blinked.
“…What?”
“I said no,” she repeated.
Silence.
“You don’t understand—” he started.
“I understand perfectly,” Amara cut in.
Her voice was calm.
Controlled.
“If I walk out now… we lose.”
Ethan stared at her.
“We?” he repeated.
Amara held his gaze.
“Yes. We.”
That word changed everything.
Ethan leaned back slightly.
Studying her.
“You planned this,” he said slowly.
Amara didn’t deny it.
“I planned part of it.”
A pause.
“But not all.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“Who else is involved?”
Amara hesitated.
Then—
“Someone bigger than Elizabeth.”
Silence filled the room again.
Ethan exhaled slowly.
“I’ve already started digging,” he said.
“Good,” Amara replied.
“Because we don’t have time.”
THE SHIFT
Ethan leaned forward again.
Lowered his voice.
“What do you need?”
Amara’s expression sharpened.
Now—
They were aligned.
“I need you to let them think I’m weak.”
Ethan frowned.
“That won’t be hard right now,” he muttered.
Amara ignored that.
“I need access to the original financial logs.”
“You’ll have them.”
“And I need you to find out who signed that warrant.”
“I’m already on it.”
A pause.
Then Amara delivered the real move.
“And Ethan…”
His eyes lifted.
“Do not trust anyone in that company.”
Silence.
“Not even your own people.”
That landed.
Hard.
CUT TO: THE SHADOW
A dark office.
City lights glowing through the glass.
A man stood with his back turned.
Watching everything.
A screen in front of him displayed:
AMARA LAWSON – IN CUSTODY
A slow smile spread across his face.
“Good,” he said quietly.
Behind him—
Elizabeth Cole stepped forward.
“You said this would work,” she said.
The man didn’t turn.
“It is working.”
Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed.
“She’s not broken.”
A pause.
“She’s calculating.”
The man chuckled softly.
“That’s why she’s dangerous.”
Finally—
He turned.
But his face remained in shadow.
“And that’s why…”
A pause.
“…she has to stay exactly where she is.”
BACK TO AMARA
The guard knocked.
“Time’s up.”
Ethan stood.
Reluctantly.
“This isn’t over,” he said.
Amara gave a small nod.
“I know.”
As she stood—
She leaned slightly closer.
“Get ready,” she whispered.
Ethan’s brow furrowed.
“For what?”
Amara’s eyes darkened.
“For when they realize…”
A pause.

CHAPTER 21 – THE CELL

The metal door slammed shut.
CLANG.
And just like that—
Amara Lawson was no longer in control of a boardroom…
She was inside a cell.
Cold walls.
Dim light.
Silence that felt too loud.
A woman on the bunk across from her watched quietly.
Curious.
Measuring.
“You don’t look like you belong here,” she said.
Amara didn’t answer.
She walked in slowly.
Sat.
Composed.
“I’m just visiting,” Amara replied calmly.
The woman let out a short laugh.
“Yeah… they all say that.”
But Amara wasn’t joking.
She leaned back slightly.
Closed her eyes for a second.
And replayed everything.
The vote.
The exposure.
The arrest.
Every move.
Every reaction.
Every mistake.
Then—
Her eyes opened.
Sharp.
Focused.
“Step one… complete,” she whispered.
Across from her, the woman frowned.
“Did you say something?”
Amara smiled faintly.
“Nothing important.”
But it was.
Because this wasn’t a fall.
This was positioning.
CUT TO: ETHAN
Ethan paced his office like a storm trapped in a room.
“They arrested her in my company.”
His voice was low.
Dangerous.
“And you’re telling me no one saw this coming?”
His assistant stood still.
Careful.
“Sir… the warrant was signed at a very high level.”
Ethan stopped.
Turned slowly.
“How high?”
A pause.
“Above us.”
That was all he needed.
Ethan grabbed his phone.
Dialed.
“Get me Director Hassan.”
A beat.
“I don’t care where he is.”
Another beat.
“Tell him Ethan Cole is calling.”
CUT TO: THE CELL
Keys jingled.
Footsteps approached.
“Lawson.”
Amara stood.
The guard opened the cell.
“Visitor.”
The woman on the bunk raised a brow.
“Already? You must be important.”
Amara said nothing.
But inside—
She expected this.
VISITATION ROOM
A glass wall.
A chair.
A phone.
Amara stepped in.
Sat down.
Picked up the receiver.
And froze.
Because the person on the other side…
Wasn’t Ethan.
It was him.
The man from the warehouse.
The traitor.
Alive.
Watching her.
Smiling.
“Miss me?” he said.
Amara’s grip tightened slightly.
But her face—
Remained unreadable.
“You should be dead,” she said quietly.
He leaned back.
Relaxed.
“And you should be free.”
A pause.
“But here we are.”
Silence stretched between them.
Then he leaned forward.
“You really thought Elizabeth was your biggest problem?”
Amara didn’t blink.
“She’s just the surface.”
That landed.
But she didn’t react.
“What do you want?” she asked.
He smiled wider.
“To help you.”
Amara almost laughed.
“You tried to kill me.”
“Correction,” he said calmly.
“I was paid to.”
A beat.
“And now?”
He tilted his head.
“Now… I’m switching sides.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Suspicious.
Amara studied him.
Carefully.
“Why?”
His smile faded slightly.
“Because the people behind this…”
A pause.
“…are coming for me too.”
That changed things.
Amara leaned in.
“Start talking.”
He shook his head slowly.
“Not yet.”
Her eyes hardened.
“You don’t get to set terms.”
He leaned closer.
Voice low.
“I just did.”
A long pause.
Then—
He dropped the bomb.
“You want out of here?”
Amara said nothing.
“Then you need me.”
CUT TO: ETHAN
Ethan slammed the phone down.
“They set her up.”
His assistant nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
“And it goes deeper than Elizabeth.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Good.”
A dangerous calm settled over him.
“Then I don’t have to play nice anymore.”
BACK TO AMARA
She slowly placed the receiver back.
Guard opened the door.
But before she left—
She looked back at the man.
“Be careful,” she said softly.
He smirked.
“Why?”
Amara’s eyes turned cold.
“Because if you’re lying…”
A pause.
“I’ll finish what you started.”
Then she walked out.

CHAPTER 20 – THE ARREST
The room didn’t breathe.
It froze.
Bootsteps echoed against the marble floor.
Slow.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
“Amara Lawson?”
One of the officers stepped forward.
Voice firm.
Official.
Amara didn’t answer.
Not because she couldn’t—
But because her mind was racing too fast.
“This must be a mistake,” Ethan said sharply, stepping in front of her.
“You have no grounds—”
“We have a warrant, sir.”
The officer held up the document.
Calm.
Unmoved.
Ethan snatched it.
Eyes scanning fast.
Jaw tightening.
“No…” he muttered.
“This was closed. The evidence was cleared.”
“New evidence has been submitted,” the officer replied.
“And approved.”
Silence.
Deadly.
Amara finally looked up.
Her gaze drifted—
Past the officers…
Past the chaos…
Straight to the door.
Elizabeth Cole stood there.
Still.
Elegant.
Untouched.
And smiling.
That smile said everything.
This was her move.
Amara’s chest rose slowly.
Then—
She stepped forward.
“I’ll go.”
Ethan turned sharply.
“What?”
“I said I’ll go,” she repeated.
Voice calm.
Steady.
“No,” Ethan snapped.
“You’re not going anywhere with them.”
Amara looked at him.
Really looked this time.
“You can’t stop this,” she said quietly.
“I can try.”
“And if you fail?”
That hit harder than anything else.
A beat of silence passed between them.
Heavy.
Unspoken.
Then Amara softened—
Just slightly.
“Trust me.”
Ethan’s eyes searched hers.
For fear.
For doubt.
For weakness.
But found none.
Only something stronger.
A plan.
He stepped back slowly.
Reluctantly.
“Don’t say anything without a lawyer,” he said under his breath.
Amara gave a small nod.
The officer moved forward.
Cold metal clicked around her wrists.
The sound echoed louder than it should have.
Gasps filled the room.
Not because she was arrested—
But because of how she stood.
Straight.
Calm.
Unbroken.
As they led her toward the door—
Elizabeth stepped aside.
Graceful.
Like royalty allowing passage.
Their eyes met.
“You should’ve stayed quiet,” Elizabeth murmured.
Amara didn’t stop walking.
But she answered.
“You should’ve finished the job.”
A flicker.
Just a flicker—
In Elizabeth’s eyes.
Amara leaned slightly as she passed.
Voice low.
“Because now…”
A pause.
Cold.
Precise.
“I’m coming back.”
Then she walked past her.
And this time—
Elizabeth didn’t smile.
Outside—
Cameras flashed.
Voices shouted.
Chaos exploded.
“Amara! Did you steal the money?”
“Are you guilty?”
“Was this all a lie?”
But Amara said nothing.
She didn’t look at them.
Didn’t react.
Because her mind was already ahead.
Three steps ahead.
Inside the car—
The door slammed shut.
Silence.
For the first time since it started—
She allowed herself to exhale.
Slow.
Controlled.
Then—
She smiled.
Because this…
Was exactly where she needed to be.
Back inside—
Ethan turned sharply.
“Get me the best legal team in the city.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And find out who approved that warrant.”
His voice dropped.
Dangerous.
“I want names.”
But across the room—
One man stood frozen.
The same man who rushed in earlier.
Sweating.
Shaking.
Ethan noticed.
Walked toward him slowly.
“You knew,” Ethan said quietly.
The man swallowed.
Hard.
“I… I didn’t have a choice—”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“Wrong answer.”𝓼𝓱𝓾𝓵𝔂𝔀𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓮𝓼
