The name "pandoro" comes from the Italian expression "pane d’oro" (meaning "golden bread"), which refers both to its golden color—thanks to the rich use of butter and eggs—and to its premium quality, historically associated with refined desserts.
The origin of the name is also tied to Venetian traditions. During the Renaissance, noble families in Venice enjoyed soft, rich cakes, often adorned with gold leaf for decoration. When Domenico Melegatti patented the pandoro in the 19th century in the form we know today, the name was chosen to evoke this sense of luxury and festivity.
Additionally, its star-shaped design and soft texture made it a symbol of Christmas celebrations, further cementing its reputation as a "precious" dessert.
