International Tempranillo Day is celebrated every year, on the second Thursday of November. It’s purpose is to celebrate and honour the Tempranillo grape, used to make red wine, while being known for its rich Flavors of cherry, plum, and spice.
While Tempranillo originated in Spain, it is also grown in other countries such as the United States, Chile, France and Argentina. The black grape ripens earlier than most grapes, so much so, that as of 2018, Tempranillo is the third most widely planted crop.
The Tempranillo grape’s aging process is very important to it’s distinctive character, for instance: Wine aged in French oak barrels tend to have more refined and mixed flavours, whereas those in American oak barrels bring out bold and robust elements, offering something for everyone.
International Tempranillo day is not just a celebration of wine, but also to explore the taste and style of Spanish winemaking.
