Stone carvings on the walls of the Varamurthieswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu (India, of course) depict the process of conception and birth of a person. If the different stages of pregnancy surprise no one, then the image of fertilization is simply unthinkable. Thousands of years before the discovery of these same cells, before the ultrasound and microscope, the 6,000-year-old temple carved a detailed process of how cells meet, merge, and grow in a woman's womb.
