Cor blimey it's been a bit blooming cold πŸ₯Ά
Small battles against the general coughs and colds remedied with rest and recuperation and staying warm.
I took a couple of the children along to Stowmarkets fireworks which were exceptional. We had a pleasant evening on a little hill eating sweets and soaking it all in. Thoroughly recommend.

I had full intention to fit a diesel heater in the caravan this week but that dastardly weather put the mockers on it, and all I could manage was hot soup, a crusty roll and hot chocolate πŸ˜‚
The tools are onsite now so we're halfway there!

We are completely out of the last pressing of juice now, so the plan is to get another happening this coming week 🀞
Juice on the horizon, a great Christmas gift option and addition to a feasting table.

I'll make Christmas Wreaths ready for the begining of December. Do let me know if you'd be interested in purchasing as it might encourage me to be braver in this cold!

Be sure to have your waterproofs at the ready when heading out and keep your fires burning (or heating on) for your return.
Have a wonderful weekend πŸ‚ and please do swing by the shop tomorrow if you fancy a jaunt out.

A note πŸ‚
I'm slowing, which feels opposite to what I feel like I'm ment to be doing.
This time of year is a heady mix of emotions. We literally have a plethora of family Birthdays and winter celebrations alongside seasonal dates of grief.
Although I felt myself leaning more gently into this colder time, and even planning near future shindigs I found myself hankering after a day where the apple trees were more dressed with their leaves. A small desperation for things to be as they were.
My grief has attached itself to this time of the year. The experience of family death in these months past clings like morning frost glistening.
This year I feel less fraut with it.
I believe Crapes is healing something deep inside my heart.
It forever reminds me to 'Keep things simple' and take 'One day at a time', and whilst things get a little frenetic here and there, I can choose which part of that I'd like to join, and the parts I may choose to leave.
Have a bountiful day. Lots to enjoy if we're looking to see it x

A gentle week in the shop this week. Our heads have been occupied with mail orders, poly tunnel winter projects and skip ordering.
Well done . Mail order apples travelling all the way north to Scotland πŸ™ how wonderful.

It's been great to see folks making with the Medlars and develop a deeper connection to this funny little apple. Perhaps I'll also try creating something with it next week. The colour it develops through the cooking process is something else.
Benji poached pears yesterday, bravo πŸ‘ and created a simple but delightfully yummy after dinner dessert. Thoroughly recommend.

Hope your week is ticking over gently and that you had a moment in the sunshine today 🌞

Shop opening times are Mon/Tues and Fri/sat 9-5pm do pop by if your free to grub yourself something good.

Last week I baked my first ever Pumpkin Pie πŸ‚
Never had a year gone by that I didn't think about making one.
When I lived in my first house with my son Keller at 19 the internet was just kind of happening. I read that Pumpkin Pie wasn't even made with Pumpkins but some tinned variation in America. I was keen to make the sweet kind of pie but had absolutely no idea. Armed with completely the wrong information I've continued to hanker after this sweet treat with no actual full power motivation to seek another recipe for what, 25years πŸ˜‚........until now.

I baked and cleaned for basically a day. The kitchen looked like a boms'etit but I made space for the scales and just got on. If I let the OCD over power me I might never do a thing!

The end result was beyond perfect. The smell, the texture, the pastry. Feel like I reached level 11 adulting πŸ’ͺ did my deliveries and happened upon a nice bit of cream from my sister in law, nice one Martha! and all the kids, plus husband were happy as larry πŸ™

Thanks also to my dear friend Tara in the wilds of off grid Scotland who taught me to make pastry last year.
I was probably wingeing at her on a visit, about making, tea/dinner , whilst she knocked up a full power pheasant pie with all the trimmings in an outdoor kitchen. She then patiently went through the pastry process multiple times, letting me know the importance of the cold and even guided me by phone when I had my first bash back in the south.
I remember telling her it was all good because I could make the pastry outside just like I had at hers, when she laughed and said 'Youve got a flipping fridge ya narnar!'

Thank goodness for friends eh.
Life is a trip ✨

Have a glorious day folks.

I've had a couple of nights at the farm whilst Benji held the fort at the house this week. I have been super busy with other work so pottering away at the cabin has been divine. Clearing a workspace for Ella and I to create some more autumnal wreaths, planting bulbs and acorns (🀞for mighty oaks) was just what the doctor ordered.

Catch us this Thursday at the Monories for good vibes, banging tunes and the most delicious scran.

Hope to see you there!

In another lifetime, I lived in a little housing association house in Halstead, Essex. It was our first house. Keller my eldest son was just a baby so 24years past.
We'd come from from a little flat without central heating which I loved on Ables rd. The flat was an old council build, a different set of bricks to this fancy new one we'd landed in.
I felt a bit lost on the estate. People had high ideas and neatly kept gardens. I was much more comfortable with the rough corners of the forgiving red brick flat and my open fire.
Mandy, Shaun and little Charlie lived opposite. Mandy drove a Morris Minor and they had a Bedford camper parked round the back. She was a welcoming face in a world of magnolia walls and box rooms.
She took 19 year old Emily under her wing.
As you entered the wooden gate of her garden the pergola lent like a lazy friend with Jazmin drapped like curtains. The smell was divine. To the right was the biggest clump of fire pokers. I adored them. The colour, the shape. The way they take up space. Natures firework. I'd hoped in my little teen world to have some just like hers when I was a real grown up!
Fast forward. The familiar clump arrived here in long melford. I rescued this from a garden job I had a couple of years ago. It was a wee sickly thing and didn't really flower much last year at all but look at her now. So grand against the blue sky.
Once she's done flowering I'm going to split her and take a section along to Crapes. I hope the fire cracker will enjoy it there as much as this corner πŸ™
