Gamrie Gardens CIC

Gamrie Gardens CIC Gamrie Gardens is an exciting project under development! We are creating a space to nourish, celebrate, heal, and grow.

Welcome to Gamrie Gardens CIC - community allotments, volunteer-led market garden, and honesty shop (open May–Sept), growing beyond organic near Gardenstown, Aberdeenshire, focused on sustainable food and land stewardship. Located in Banff, near Gamrie, the goal of the project is to create a vibrant community space where people can come together to learn, share, and engage with nature. Our vision

is to create a magical and inviting space that respects and celebrates the environment. We are looking for participants, volunteers, and donors to help make our dream a reality. As part of the project, we are building a community garden, hosting workshops, markets and festivals, growing our own food and medicine, and creating a farm shop. We are also looking to set up guest cabins, graze local animals, plant a woodland to increase local wildlife habitat, and introduce 2-3 no-touch bee hives. In the future, we hope to open the space for gatherings, yoga, meditation, and workshops. If you’re looking to make a difference and help create a vibrant community space, please join us in our mission to make Gamrie Gardens a reality.

We’re really happy to share that Gamrie Gardens is now officially a Community Interest Company (CIC).

On paper, this is a legal structure. In practice, it simply gives shape to what we’ve already been doing.

It means Gamrie Gardens is formally recognised as an organisation that exists for community benefit — not private gain — and that any surplus generated is reinvested directly back into the work here.

Nothing about what we do day to day changes.

We’re still growing food, supporting wildlife, restoring habitat, sharing skills, and building a space where people can connect more closely with land, food, and each other.

What it does do is strengthen the foundations underneath all of that.

It helps us grow in a way that stays rooted in:
🌳 ecological stewardship
🧄food growing and local resilience
🦇wildlife and habitat care
🐑education and community learning
🪿long-term care of the land we work with

For us, this is less a “new chapter” and more a strengthening of the same one.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Gamrie Gardens so far - you’re part of why this exists at all.

The downpour over the last few days has really helped the pond project. On the left you can see where it’s already holding water and on the right you can see the where the rain has turn the ground into mud, which exactly what we want! Winnie’s task is to kneed those layers together and compacting the ground and mixing together the water, mud and decomposing plant matter we’ve been adding in. This is all looking very promising! The right side will be holding water in no time. The biggest challenge is getting that same effect around the back and sides of the pond.

Come Volunteer at Gamrie Gardens!

We’ve been thinking it’s time to open things up a bit more again.

The garden is at that point in the season where everything is happening at once - planting, weeding, harvesting, animals, seed saving will start soon, too. We are entering our busiest season. And it works best when there are more hands in it.

So we’re inviting you to come get involved.

There’s no experience needed. You don’t need to “know how” to do anything in particular. Most of it is just showing up, learning as you go, and being part of what’s happening here.

Some days are calm. Some days are muddy and chaotic. Most days are somewhere in between.

If you’ve ever wanted to spend time in the garden, get your hands in the soil, or just be around this kind of work - you’re welcome.

Send us a message if you want to come down.

Big shout out to Robin who’s come back 3 years in a row now to help us in the garden. He’s a volunteer from Huntley who found us on right when we were starting out. We became fast friends and he’s come back every year, sometimes a few times each season. He’s incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to anything plants, herbs, seeds etc. We regularly swap seeds with Robin and in fact, he’s the one to thank for the marvellous garlic bulbs we grow each year! The first ones came from his garden. Robin deserves all the thanks for his contribution and support to our project, and for his ongoing friendship. We are always looking forward to his next visit.

Pond Project Update

We started this project by digging out the pond and shaping the base to prepare it properly for what would come next.

Before Winnie arrived, we spent time in the pond clearing stones, securing the perimeter, and making sure the space was safe and ready for her work. Lots of volunteers have helped with every stage - it’s been very much a shared effort.

Once Winnie moved in and settled, we began introducing material into the pond in layers.

This included:
- Wet compost - fresh weeds, plant matter, and garden waste from the market garden
- Dry compost - old straw and hay

Combined with Winnie’s own muck (and the very wet Scottish weather), this creates the conditions needed for the next stage of the process.

Winnie’s natural behaviour - her hooves and snout, shaped for foraging and digging - means she moves through the material, turning and pushing it into the soil. This helps work organic matter deeper into the ground, where it begins to break down.

Over time, this supports the formation of an anaerobic layer, which is what eventually helps seal the pond when combined with the compacted soil and decomposing material beneath.

We’re already seeing real change.

Parts of the pond are now holding water with very little leakage, which is an exciting early sign that the system is beginning to work.

The next step is encouraging a more even coverage across the whole pond - including the sides - so the sealing process can develop consistently.

To say the least, we’re thrilled to be working on this project with Winnie, and even more excited to already be seeing such promising results. Winnie is the sweetest, friendliest pig and we are completely in love with her.

We're trying to share frequent updates through reels and document every step of the process so make sure you're following along for updates!

Here’s a photo from the last veg box which was built around the wonderfully ridiculous ostrich egg from Little Rowater. ()

That’s the thing about these boxes… you never quite know what’s going to show up.

There’s a lot growing in the garden right now, and the next box will be shaped by whatever is ready in the moment - harvested, gathered, and pulled together just before it goes out the door.

What we can promise is this: they’re always full of seasonal abundance, a bit of surprise, and a bit of magic.

The next one is now open for pre-orders

Pick up: 12th & 13th June

Pre-order by: 5th June

Delia has started to be quite playful! I didn’t get it all on camera but this evening she was hoping around with the others and seemed to be in a silly and joyful mood, full of energy. It was so nice to see her like this. She’s been settling in nicely over the last few weeks but often can be found on her own dozing or grazing. So to see her partake in evening zoomies with the others was a real treat. We love to see her so happy.

For those who don’t know, Delia is an 11 year old girl we’ve taken on permanently after she spent the last year moving around. We love that she’s feeling so comfortable here.

Third box of the season has been picked up by all so we can now share it with you! Every box is a surprise, even to me. The hero of this one was the incredible ostrich egg from our friends at Little Rowater. We’ve opened up pre-orders on the website now for our June 12/13th pick up. That link is in the comments 🙂
