Great news – my honeybee colony has made it through the winter.
The warm weather means that this week, I have been able to do the first proper inspection of the year. If you read the handbooks about beekeeping they tell you that because you can’t inspect the colonies over winter, so these are the months to take stock of your resources and get ready for next spring. Having now been through a winter, I can tell you that this is not my experience. Winter beekeeping is all about making sure each week, that the colonies have enough food so that they don’t starve and checking that the latest storm hasn’t blown the hives over.
It was all worth it though. In this week’s inspection, I found that my colony is quite small at the moment but the queen is busy laying lots of eggs. Hopefully, the colony can continue to increase in size and if the good weather continues that means new honey supplies coming soon.
