Lanegale Nursery
The Story Past & Future
Lanegale Nursery was, until about 12 years ago, a very successful alpine plant nursery, called “Anglia Alpines”. Then new owners took over with an ambitious expansion plan. They increased production massively to supply the likes of Home-Base and B&Q. Their customers messed them about badly, and other factors came into play resulting in bankruptcy for the nu
rsery business (This is what I have been told anyway). Since then, the premises have been in decline, and became overgrown and sank into bad repair, in spite of several attempts to revive the business by different tenants. Finally the nursery was sold at auction in about 2009. The land is currently dilapidated and a sad shadow of its former glory. We are the new business owners, and have started a medium term plan to bring the nursery back into good repair, and full production specialising in edible products and plants. We have made a start with the glass houses, but still have a long way to go. Please bear with us while we make the nursery beautiful again and a pleasant place to visit, even if just to view. This year (2013) we have grown about 10,000 plants for resale, and 8,000 plants for production of fresh chillis. Smoked and dried products as well as sauces and other preserves will be available early 2014 – that's a winter job. Plants and peppers are available as from mid to late September (next year will be earlier). Also over the 2013/2014 winter we will be growing gourmet mushrooms using natural growing mediums. Varieties such as Beech (Shimeji), Lion's Mane (Pom Pom), Shiitake, Pioppino (Black Poplar), Enokitake, Maiitake, King Oyster, various other Oysters, Matsutake, Nebrodini (Abalone), St George, Wood Ear and others. We may try to grow premium mushrooms such as Black Trompette, Chanterelles (Girolle), Hedgehog (Pied de Mouton), Lobster, Morels, Mousseron (Fairy Ring), Porcini (Cepes), Chicken-of-the-Woods and others that can only be grown seasonally outdoors on living trees, or under special conditions. For the 2014 season we will be growing chilli and sweet peppers again, but also many other edible plants and their produce. We will be offering tasty heritage Tomatoes, Tomatillos (a MUST for Mexican cooking along with Pinto Beans), herbs, edible flowers, courgettes, squashes and a few other lines. All will be available as plug, small, medium and large plants as well as their produce and preserves and products. Herbs, micro-greens etc. will be available in living punnets as well as cut & bagged produce. We will also be planting suitable varieties into hanging baskets and various patio tubs available all summer; many will be bearing full fruit later in the summer. Future years will see micro-, teeny-, mini- and baby greens, baby, petite & fully grown salads, soft fruits, baby vegetables, field vegetables (potatoes, swedes, turnips, parsnips), garlic, horse-radish, free range chickens, ducks and eggs – everything edible! We will be attending Farmers Markets in 2014 and other events all over the Midlands, London and East Anglia so you can visit us nearer to where you live and inspect and sample our products. Our websites (http://www.lanegale-chilli-peppers.co.uk & http://www.lanegale-gourmet-mushrooms.co.uk – both currently under development) will have full details of all our products and events. Our page www.facebook.com/lanegale.nursery has details about the nursery and its products. You will be able to forward book orders and buy online through the websites, and view our various web-cams from early 2014 to witness live the plants growing in the various greenhouses and polytunnels
