🧅 Apparently, I've been missing out...

Before moving to England, I had never tried a pickled onion.
Last week, a customer asked if I could bring some into the shop, so I did.
Yesterday, they came back with something even better... their own way of pickling onions.
And I absolutely love things like this.

When I took over this shop, I thought that I would mostly be the one recommending things, answering questions and helping people discover new produce.
But it turns out it works both ways. And that makes me very happy :)

Every week, someone teaches me something.
A different recipe.
A different way of cooking something.
A little food tradition.
Or, in this case, how to pickle an onion.

It makes the shop feel less like a place where I simply sell things and more like a place where ideas get passed around.

With love and gratitude

🌿 A little plantain cooking ideas

Some of you are new to plantain, and a few of you have asked me “How do I actually cook these?” 😊
So I thought I’d make things a little easier.

I’ve put together a few simple recipes with 3 different ways to enjoy plantain, from sweet and caramelised to crispy and savoury.
They are also available to have a look at in the shop.

If you’ve picked up plantain and weren’t quite sure what to do with it, hopefully these will give you a few ideas. 🍌
And honestly, plantain is rather fun once you get to know it. It can go from breakfast to snack to side dish depending on how you cook it.

If you’ve never tried plantain before, these are a good place to start.

Have a blessed day and see you tomorrow
❤️ Irina

🍌 Plantain

Unlike the bananas you might grab and eat straight from the fruit bowl, plantains are generally cooked, even when fully ripe. 🍌
How you use it depends on how ripe it is. Green plantain is firm and starchy, while as it ripens it becomes softer and sweeter.

🟢 GREEN PLANTAIN
Savoury rather than sweet.
● Slice into thick rounds, fry until softened, smash them flat, then fry again until crisp for tostones.
● Peel, slice thinly and fry or bake until crisp for plantain chips.
● Cut into chunks and add to Caribbean-style curries, stews or soups. Green plantain holds its shape well and adds a satisfying, starchy texture.
● Boil or steam until tender, then mash with seasoning as a savoury alternative to mashed potatoes.
● Slice lengthways, fry or bake, and serve alongside rice, beans, grilled food or spicy dishes

🟡 YELLOW, RIPE PLANTAIN
As the skin turns yellow, the flesh becomes softer and develops more sweetness.
● Slice lengthways or into rounds and pan-fry until golden and caramelised.
● Roast or bake until the edges become beautifully browned.
● Add cooked slices to porridge, oats, yoghurt or cereal for a naturally sweet, warm addition. A little cinnamon works beautifully here too.
● Serve alongside rice and beans, spicy dishes or grilled food, where the sweetness balances savoury and spicy flavours.
● Mash ripe plantain and use it in pancakes or fritters.

🟤 VERY RIPE PLANTAIN
When the skin becomes heavily spotted or almost black, don't panic. This is when the flesh is at its sweetest and softest.
● Fry the slices until deeply golden and caramelised.
● Bake with cinnamon and add to porridge, granola or yoghurt.
● Mash into pancake batter, muffins or other baked dishes.
● Simply fry or bake and enjoy as a sweet side alongside breakfast or as a snack.

One fruit, several stages of ripeness, and quite a different ingredient depending on when you decide to cook it. 🍌

🌱 A little nourishment from plantain

● Boosts Immune Function: High levels of vitamin C and vitamin A act as powerful antioxidants
● Supports Heart Health: Rich in potassium, plantains help regulate fluid balance, lower blood pressure, and reduce strain on the cardiovascular system
● Improves Digestion: Dietary fiber and resistant starch (especially in green, unripe plantains) add bulk to stool, prevent constipation, and support a healthy gut microbiome
● Stabilizes Blood Sugar: Unripe green plantains contain high amounts of resistant starch, a type of fiber that digests slowly and prevents sharp spikes in blood glucose
● Promotes Brain Health: A single serving provides a strong source of vitamin B6, which aids in energy metabolism, neurological function, and the reduction of inflammatory symptoms

Now I just need to decide which way I'm going to try first as I never used plantain before.
Have you cooked plantain before?

✨ A little change in the shop…

I was very kindly given a shelf for free, and it gave me the perfect opportunity to move a few things around.

The result?
A little more space in the shop and, more importantly, more room for people who use walking aids, wheelchairs or simply need a bit more space to get around comfortably. 💚

Running a small shop means I’m constantly looking at the space and thinking, “How can I make this work a little better?”
And today I did. Small improvements do add up :)

This is one of those small changes that might not look like much, but I think it makes a difference.

And a big thank you to the person who gave me the shelf. It is highly appreciated.

With love and gratitude
❤️ Irina

🌱 Seven months. 🌱

This week marks seven months since I opened the doors for the first time. My first official trading day was a Saturday, and it happened to be a Brampton Farmers Market day too.
Funny how things align sometimes. 🥰

I remember that first day: heart racing, legs shaking, worries on top of worries, and a to-do list longer than a Saturday morning queue. 😅
Yet somehow, it feels like it was both yesterday and a lifetime ago. Seven months have gone by in what feels like the blink of an eye.

And today, as I reach the end of another shop week, I’m definitely feeling those seven months in my bones. 🫠
Running this shop on my own means my working day starts long before the shop doors open, and it finishes long after the shop doors close.
Most days I just get on with it. One thing after another. But sometimes, usually by Saturday afternoon, I realise just how much energy has gone into the week.
But tiredness, stress and anxiety aside, I’m also sitting here feeling very grateful.

Grateful for every person who has walked through the door over these past seven months.
For the familiar faces, the new faces, the conversations, the laughs, the recommendations, the little stories shared over the counter and all the people who have chosen to support my little independent business.
Every purchase matters. Every share, comment, message and recommendation matters too. More than you probably realise. 💚

Seven months on, I’m still learning, still figuring things out, still filling those shelves… and still wondering where on earth the time went. 😅

There have been early mornings, long days, plenty of learning, unexpected turns, and even a few people who thought I should “go back to my country”. 😔
But I’m still here. Because this is my home.
And after everything these past seven months have brought, I can’t help but wonder what the next seven will bring. 🌿

With love and gratitude for you all
❤️ Irina

The shop website is finally live 🙌

A little while ago, I shared that I was working on creating an online home for the shop, and I asked what you would like to see there.

And I want to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to share ideas and suggestions. I really did listen, and some of those ideas have already found their way onto the website.

But this is only the beginning.

There are still a few pages I’m working on and updating, and there will be more recipes added over time.

I’m also thinking carefully about how I could make fruit & veg boxes work. I’d love to offer something useful and practical, but I want to make sure I can work out the logistics properly before promising something I can’t deliver at this time.

So for now, the website is live, but it’s still growing and evolving along with the shop.

And this time, I’d love to hear from you again.

Have a look around and tell me what you think.
I genuinely welcome the feedback.

After all, this little online home started with your ideas, and I’d love for it to keep growing in a way that is actually useful to the people who visit it.

You can find the website link in the comments

Thank you for being part of the journey. 🌱
And thank you We are digital for bringing my ideas to life.

With love and gratitude
❤️ Irina
